From horrible to champs in 4 seasons? Topic

After I post this, let's hear your stories!

So, bulldogg431 and I have been working together on a few teams for about the last year. We've got five teams on different worlds that we've been playing with, and each of them has had significant success... But none like the Washington and Lee team on Leahy.

We took over this team in season 89. They had only ever had one playoff appearance and had NEVER won a conference title. The year before, W&L had been 6&7. GUESS had their roster rating at 70, and their recruiting class at 220. Over the previous 10 seasons, they had averaged the 180th ranked roster in all of D3 with the 160th ranked recruiting class.

Since we took over this team, in 4 seasons, we've gone 8-5, 11-2, 10-5, and now 13-1. Each season has shown steady improvement, including a playoff appearance this season and the school's first ever conference title, a dominating win over the conference's previous juggernaut (a team that had won more than 120 straight conference games). W&L owns the #3 ranking and a #1 seed in the playoffs.

Our biggest improvements, though, and the ones were most proud of are our roster and recruit rankings. Our roster rankings have improved over the four years: 138, 42, 27, and 7. Our recruiting classes have improved just as much: 42, 11, 9, and 4. We really feel like this team has a legitimate shot to win the whole thing only four years after we took over, and we're very proud of this!

We were curious to hear some of your stories about improving a school who had been one of the mediocre teams or cellar dwellars. Anyone else having success with fun little strategies like this?

One of my favorite teams. When we decided to add a team in Leahy, we sought out a team that was one of the  most terrible teams in D-III. When I came across Washington and Lee, and saw that they had just 1 playoff appearance in their entire history and no conference titles, I just knew we had to get them. It has been a pleasant surprise with their rapid decent. Next year should be another good year as we are only losing 5 starters.

Not really a bad history overall, but certainly not good in the several seasons before my arrival.  I brought the 'ole Wishbone to town and made a National Title Game appearance in my 5th season (losing 10-7 in a nailbiter).

This is Baldwin Wallace in Rockne. I took this team back in season 62 after it had been abandoned. From season 47-61, a 15 season span it had a total of 6 wins. In my first two seasons I won 5 games combined. All the players had been signed by the AC since the coach hadn't looked in on the team in forever.  5 wins no big deal. But I saw improvement. My 3rd season we went 14-2 and won the conference and won a PO game. Still the only CC and PO appearance and win in school history.

Next came season 65. My final season at B-W and the first season of 2.0. This team had the talent to compete for at least a final 4 spot. Wrong. It went 7-6 and was losing to teams that had been long sim and where it had advantages on the lines by 20 points. Conte's inferno raged. I was angry and quit my all time favorite rebuild. WIS felt like giving guys 1 free season when some had 3-4 teams and even more as being a fair deal. Wrong.

Bottom line is rebuilds have always been fun and have always been very doable as long as you know how to look for good high potential talent that flies under the radar. You can go from a 10 season abandon to Conference Champ in 3-4 seasons.

First team I ever coached. Had no idea what I was doing, but managed to get the Wabash team in Rockne to the only playoff game in it's history.

Mr Chaney started recruiting for me that season and all the Freshmen were his recruits.  They are now Juniors....with only 3 seniors on the team.

And yes, I was quite proud of that team.  :)

glaity, you and I had some GREAT games between Jacksonville and Tenn. State. After starting off 0-4 at Fresno St., I'm really starting to wish I'd stayed down in D1AA
