Just be moral and pay for it.

That is why my computer got stolen...  because I in turn had unpaid for music on there.  Duh.

so where's a cheap legal site, then?

That allofmp3 is a cheap pseudo-legal site if it is still around.

maybe i'll check it out later. emusic got douchey about it where it's similar to Amazon MP3, so I'm dropping that.

I mean, I just use bit torrents...  because I am a criminal.  Public trackers are still pretty decent...  but weaseling your way into a private tracker is ideal, although difficult.
This.  Although I'm pretty good about buying the albums I've ended up loving...like this year I've bought Panda Bear, The Kills, PJ Harvey, RAA, and a few others.

Private tracker--overrated.  I'm in one, but I don't see any advantages to it.  I usually just use TPB and BTJunkie.

It's almost worth buying from Amazon for the 20 gigs of cloud space you get--plays via an Android app.  Combine that with whatever you can put on your phone/MicroSD card, and it almost removes the need to carry a dedicated music player.

Great albums from this year:

Lykke Li
PJ Harvey
Panda Bear
RAA
The Kills
O'Death
The Wkend (seriously...this is amazing.  Free download)
Fleet Foxes (leaked)

Although...I usually treat those times that I'm not carrying to mix it up via Pandora, so I'm not planning on using it.

The one I am a part of has a strict upload policy but I can usually download around 600K-1MB/s.

I hear you...but I feel like I hit that about half the time via public trackers...and even if I don't...we're talking about a half hour or hour instead of a couple minutes.  Maybe I'm in a **** one, but the selection in public is enough for me to not bother with the private one.

I always search the public sector first, just to avoid having to upload.  The one I use (waffles) has honestly every single album that has ever come out it seems like.  So, when I can't get a decent download public, I know I can get it there and get it fast.

If this has been deleted, and I'm posting in it, have I transcended the laws of the interweb?

Nope.   We've just flashed sideways.
