Chaos Theory(or Butterfly Effect is you're more familiar with that) would suggest that slight changes can have an effect on everything that happens in the future. If that doesn't really work for you perhaps you're more familiar with "For every action, there is a reaction". Hell, even go with Nature vs. Nurture if that floats your boat. All of them suggest that a change could have far-reaching effects in the future.

Something like incest could cause more of a tidal wave, for reasons discussed earlier.
