I don't think it's a poor political strategy.   The Dems have the AA vote locked in at a high rate(they're not getting 90% again without Obama).   Getting the majority Hispanic vote(They're sympathetic to our struggles!!!) pretty much guarantees a sweep in the coming elections anywhere that has a large number of minority votes.   That's why I wondered what this country is going to be like after an extended period of dominance by one party.   There will be no need to "reach across the aisle" because no one will fear losing their elected post.   It will be Dems saying "This is what we're doing.  Get on board or get out the way."
Have Republicans tried to reach across the aisle at all over the last 5+ years? This goes both ways.
So you agree that the Dems have made no effort to reach across the aisle since Obama took office?
Not really saying that.

A lot of the policies advocated by the Dems, the ACA, the stimulus, the dream act, targeted tax breaks for the low/middle class, etc., are fairly middle of the road positions.

But if you listen to the GOP's response to those things (or watch the GOP PR channel...I mean Fox news), you'll see people screaming about the ACA being socialist government take over, about how Dems are trying to let all illegal immigrants vote, about how there's a War on Christmas, etc.

Both sides tend to suck but, lately, the GOP is really running up the score.

While the left continues to get on their soapboxes and preach that all conservatives / Republicans are evil.

Got it.

Politicking and policy are different.

Obviously no one reaches across the aisle while they're giving a speech trying to rally their base. But they should at least try to compromise when it comes to legislating. The GOP has essentially refused to even entertain the idea of compromise.

It makes sense, from the GOP's point of view, to act this way. Any compromise is seen as a victory for Obama. Double down if the legislation is actually a good idea because stopping it also prevents a possible improvement in voter's lives. If you can then convince people that the lack of progress is actually Obama/the Dems' fault, it's a political grand slam.

Of course.  So everything wrong with the country is actually the GOP's fault.

Got it.

It's funny when liberals / Dems can't see the hypocrisy of their arguments against conservatives / Reps.
I don't, so show me.
Of course you don't.  That's part of what makes it so funny.
So don't, then.

Where did I say that?

You have a habit of reading a post and then putting into a special tec only translator and coming to a conclusion not implied by the post.

For ****'s sake.   Both parties have taken a "My way or not at all" approach during this administration.   If we want to play "Who started it?", I guess we could but suffice to say that nobody has attempted a legit compromise in years.

"Whites(the Repub party) hates brown kids!!!"

And that's the disconnect. HE'S making it about race, nobody else. He's a retard. 40% of whites are Democrats.  If his point was "Democrats are trying to make it seem like Republicans are racist, that we hate Hispanics, and it's bullshit" he'd have a little bit of a stronger leg to stand on, but I'd even have a problem with that.  Republicans hate policy that often is more helpful to minority populations, that's true.  But that doesn't mean Democrats think the Republican Party is racist, though.  Don't spin it into reverse-racism ****.  Democrats aren't "declaring war on white people." Are they declaring "war" on Republicans? Sure.

And this is one of the main problems with the Republican Party.  They keep putting their foot in their mouths by saying the dumbest things.  I actually lean further right on this immigration issue than you'd think.  But it's harder to consider voting for a party that says dumb **** like "democrats say that whites hate everybody else" way too often.
Both parties spin the racism card.  It's just politics.   If it's not racism, it's sexuality or taxation or homelessness or whatever "hot button" topic can gather a few votes.   No need to pretend they don't or that you don't know what Brooks was implying.   I've already said he worded it so poorly that it's more likely to hurt the Repub party than help it.   But let's not act like the Dems haven't spun the immigration issue into "The Repubs(the old, white party) don't care about Hispanics!!"   They have.    And, I'll repeat so you don't get off track, Brooks worded it stupidly.   "War on whites" is a borderline retarded thing for a politician to say.
I probably wouldn't have jumped on here if the story was "Democrats are saying that Republicans hate Hispanics."  Or maybe I would have.  But that would have been slightly less stupid.  I disagree that that's how democrats have spun this issue, though.  Can you show me an example?

I was actually not talking about anybody specifically, but with the left in general.

BL just happened to conveniently offer himself up as an example.

If you're looking for a smoking gun, I've already said you won't find one.  The Dems are pushing policy to allow illegal immigrants that are here to stay, Repubs are stalling while demanding better border control.   The "message" is "Repubs want to send illegal kids back to....."    It can be translated to "Old white guy party doesn't care about brown kids" which Brooks declared, stupidly, that it was a war on whites.
8/6/2014 2:25 PM
Deporting these kids wouldn't make anyone racist.  And nobody's said that anyway.  So to translate in that way is beyond stupid.  Conservatives have generally wanted tougher immigration laws, but it doesn't mean that anyone hates Hispanics.

I don't get why Repubs are stalling.  Agree to take the illegal immigrants already here, but demand tougher legislation moving forward, making it well known that anyone in the future who crosses the boarder illegally gets sent back.  Who says no? Or is that too easy?
8/6/2014 2:35 PM
You don't have to be convinced.  You're not the target.  It's the Hispanic voters.    "Why won't they let those kids stay?"

They're stalling because they have no leverage.   Do you think the Dems are going to pass legislation, right before elections, saying "Yes, we're letting those who are here stay but anyone in the future is sent back.  Not questions asked"?   They "lose" the goodwill they just gained.

I know you're not that politically naive.

"Why won't they let the kids stay?" The answer would be because they're illegal immigrants.

After further review, it seems like that's what republicans are doing.  The bill democrats want to pass just focuses on the current problem of these kids.  So I don't blame Republicans here.  Does this make me racist?
