I'd rather go for a lottery pick and hope we hit it big than just barely make the playoffs and lose to the Heat in the first round.

And seriously.  The Pistons.  Ugh.
We have a better chance of beating the Heat than we do with 2 ping pong balls.

Rondo and the corpse of JON for Pau? of course you'd do that, of course Bosox Bill would think that was feasible, of course the Lakers wouldnt touch that with a 10' pole

Why not?  Those rumors actually originated out of LA didn't they?

What about all three or none at all?

Starting lineup would be Gasol, Bass, Marion, Pierce, Williams with Odom, Wilcox, Pietrus, Bradley off the bench.

*Edit- I guess I'd worry about Pierce having to guard twos

Mitch made a statement regarding a '25 year old all star point guard' - this could be any number of guys give or take a year including Chris Paul who he did trade for before Stern douched it or Deron Williams who is just sitting there waiting to exercise his player's option at the end of the year - it's Boston flacks and bloggers who keep harping on the Rondo thing - most Lakers commentators have moved onto the much more economical Sessions rumor

we dont want Rondo for the same reasons you guys dont want Rondo - outside shooting, bad attitude

and we certainly have 0 interest in the corpse of JO'n

maybe if it was Bass-Rondo and a 1st round pick but as constituted by Bosox Bill, no

Actually, if you don't give or take a year, there is exactly one.  And the story claims Mitch is literal.

and the facts are that Mitch is from the Jerry West school of we'll let you know what we're going to do after we've done it - he doesnt talk about what he intends to do

and

if it doesnt feel like you're giving almost too much away then it's probably not an equitable trade and it's probably not going to happen - like I said sweeten the deal around Rondo maybe, but JON? probably why no one but Bosox Bill is talking about it anymore

Actually, the story seemed to indicate that he doesn't say much, but doesn't lie.

Regardless of Rondo's limitations, you really think a 25 y/o all-star PG isn't enough for a 31 y/o all-star PF/C?  You don't think the Lakers would be better with Rondo instead of Gasol?

And I really thought you understood that JON was just for salary, he's not actually in there as a useful piece.

I think Pau is decidedly more valuable than Rondo.  Age doesn't really matter because Pau will overall be better over the next 3.5 years than Rondo, and then signing Rondo to a LT deal after his current deal expires will turn out rather poorly as he loses his speed.

Agree with felonius no reason to do that, it's still prob good with Rondo + Bass for Pau though.  Irregardless I don't take the other 2 deals and Simmons knows fuckall about the NBA.

I'd also worry about eMO guarding anybody.

Why would we hedge a good trade (which LA wouldn't do anyway) with 2 bad trades?  What's wrong with Pau/KG/Pierce/Ray/Avery with JON/Wilcox/Pietrus/Moore/Dooling off the bench?

I guess it depends on what you think of Odom at this point.  I think he would be better than washed up KG and Marion can still defend.

It would let the Celts at least "contend" this season and next.  I get skipping the Ray trade.

But, if you're right about Pau-Rondo, then none of it matters.  Maybe I'm misjudging how sulky Pau is and how much better Rondo would make the rest of their team.

yes and yes

let me quote a dyed in the wool boston fan: " I don't care if Gasol is 31 — he's the most skilled big man in the league, he has four or five quality years left, he's under contract through 2014 (same as Pierce), he'll be extra motivated after the trade"

and add that despite what anyone may be saying about him that he's been balling all year long (10 straight double doubles) in a situation where he's sharing attempts with Kobe and Bynum - he immediately becomes the second best (and maybe more like 1b) player on your team

and as for JON's salary? we are so far over the cap that 6m salary savings is just tax money off the books and I dont pull for that kind of team - do you?

It's not about salary savings, it's about salary matching to make the trade work.  Rondo (10m) + JON (6m) to get close to Pau (19m)

More than one way to skin that cat

This iteration is a lot more fair.
