Season 24 fizzles out, players pack up

Another year, another early playoff exit for a Yowlers team that excelled during the regular season.  Considered by many to be a team that wouldn't challenge at the start of the year when the Yowlers announced they would be icing no fewer than six rookies in full-time roles, the team surprised many by actually being highly competitive.  The youngsters knocked off an impressive 117 point season, but were squashed in the second round.  This season sees three veterans hang up the skates, including one long-time fan-favorite whose scarred face is almost synonymous with "Yowlers Hockey".

A quality second-line forward for most of his career, Majain leaves the team nearly as quietly as he entered.  A mid-round draft pick with little fanfare, Majain was always slotted into a balanced role, with just enough defensive smarts and scoring ability to be able to contribute at both ends of the ice.  Never a big locker-room talker, his quiet and contempletive manner made him a bit of an enigma for the fans, but he was always well-liked and frequently gave well-thought out interviews when asked.  He leaves with no team or league awards, but he fnished 14th in all-time scoring and 11th in all-time plus/minus.  He wore #18 throughout his Yowlers career.

An oddity in Yowlers history, Nguyen was an excellent regular-season rearguard, but due to curios in the eligiblity rules, he rarely dressed for the playoffs.  Drafted out of the VEHL (Vietnamese Elite Hockey League), Nguyen spent a number of seasons in the minors learning how to skate with blades instead of sharpened bamboo leaves.  He quickly became a fan favorite due to his high-energy play and willingness to do anything anyone told him, crashing around the ice despite his diminutive 5'5" stature.  His desire to learn and improve is probably unmatched in team history, as no Yowlers player ever came so far from such a raw starting point.  Early in his career he was often replaced in the post-season with more veteran players until eligibilty rules changed - and then he showed the team what they had been missing, delivering excellent playoff hockey.  Nguyen won the team's "Unsung Hero" award in seasons 13 and 20, and "Most Improved" award in season 21.  He wore #26 his entire career.

The Man.  The Myth.  The Torpedo.

What more can be said about the man who arguably did more than any other player in the early days of the team to promote pro hockey in Yorba Linda?  Although he was rarely a regular in the lineup, Torppala knew how to bring the fans out of their seats in his 23 seasons with the team.  (He did not skate in season 7, as he served as a player-coach for MLDML Anaheim Hills)  Never one to shy away from physical play, body checks, scraps in the corners, or knife fights with home-made shanks, Torppala terrified opposing players with his tendency to suddenly snap and attempt to kill them.  Literally.  With weapons.  Although he mellowed over the years and evolved his game into that of a quality two-way defenseman, he still managed to lead the team in PIMs in his 23rd and final season.  His 1039 career penalty minutes is 2nd all time in league history behind the legendary Jermaine Sweese, but Torppala does hold the unofficial record for most number of times suspended, at "dozens".  He won the team's "Unsung Hero" award in seasons 9 and 24, and "Most Improved" in season 9 as he moved into a full-time role on the team's blueline.  Torpedo will move into a full-time coaching role in Anaheim Hills.  Fans have already started an online campaign to have his #15 retired by the team, as "Retire15Torpedo" already has 4000 friends on Facebook.

Yowlers make first trade in five years

Today, the Yorba Linda Yowlers acquired veteran defenseman Vincent Guyette from the Henderson Hornets in exchange for defensive prospect Yamato Kenko and a 3rd round pick.  Here to talk about the trade is Yowlers coach and GM, yogsloth:

"Well, we haven't made a deal in a while... it's true.  The way we approach these things is we look at our roster, we look at our prospects, and we try to plan where we need to be.  If we have too many players at one 'age level' and not enough at another, we look to make a deal.  In this case, we had too many blueliners in Anaheim Hills without any MLD experience, and not enough with 2-3 years left to play, so we looked for a swap.  We had several offers on the table for different guys around the league, but we felt Guyette was the best fit."

Tell us about him.

"Guyette is a guy who has seen the extremes of the MLD, that's for sure!  His rookie year was something that would have destroyed lesser men.   Henderson was rebuilding that year, and only won 19 games... and Vincent was out there as a rookie in the #1 defenseman role, trying to stem the bleeding... he wound up an astonishing -100 while playing over 27 minutes a game!  It's an incredible testament to his toughness that he managed to come back in one piece mentally, so that by the time the Hornets were back on top, he was playing a leading role... finishing with a +90 rating just a few seasons later... and a + rating overall in four complete seasons.  He's got tremendous poise and a great head for the game.  We think he'll fit in perfectly here, even though we only have him for two seasons."

Kenko was in his third season for the Anacondas... tell us about him.

"He's a great little player, a great talent.  We drafted him out of the JIHL after it folded.  He was very raw, but we've got a bit of a specialty scouting program here to find players with great talent but little top-end experience.  Kenko certainly would have played for us, but in the end, we felt we had enough rookie D-men that we could part with one, and he was the one Henderson really wanted.   We wish him the best of luck in Henderson. "

Another bunch of idiots retire; nobody cares

After another completely inexplicable meltdown in which a 127 point team were utterly crushed in the first round, another group of useless idiots from the Yowlers hangs them up to go do something with their lives.  Perhaps even something they're remotely interested in, unlike hockey.  Defenseman Jan Brady becomes the new captain and target for abuse for the next three seasons' inevitable post-season implosion.

"Captain Collapse", as Yowlers fans took to calling him, retires as the sixth franchise player in history.  A regular-season superhero, Leclerq actually retires as the team's all-time leader in goals and +/-, second in points, and third in assists and power-play goals.  His playoff teams struggled tremendously, however.  During his nine-season career, the Yowlers averaged 117 points per season... but never had anything to show for it in the playoffs.  He collected two "Outstanding Defenseman" awards (seasons 20 and 25), "Best Newcomer" (season 17), and a single MVP award in his final season.  He also won the coveted Calder trophy during his first season in the league.  He wore #28 during his Yowlers career.

Apparently an endless supply of "Chuks", it would seem.  Syl actually was good friends with Wendell and requested to warehouse a season so that they could retire at the same time.  The two have apparently purchased a fishing cabin together that they plan to decorate in a neo-mediterranean style.  For, y'know, fishing. As buddies.  Loyachuk actually won the "Best Newcomer" award in season 19 and "Unsung Hero" award in season 25 for his consistent two-way play.  He wore #20 during his career.

The longest-serving Yowler, Voorhees is the sole remaining player who can remember when the Yowlers were actually worth a squirt of piss.  Although he was injured during the team's last succesful cup run in season 9, he was an important cog of that team and got his name on the cup.  A smooth-skating defenseman with a fantastic shot, he was netting hat tricks during the ultra-defensive era of the MLD.  Although he battled injuries his entire career (in fact, he only played one 82 game season his entire career), his smooth play was always welcome by the team.  Like so many other Yowlers, he struggled in the playoffs, often being accused of losing focus.  His most notable achievement would probably be winning the team's "Outstanding Defenseman" award back in season 8, when team captain Sparky Clemons spent most of the season in Sweden.  He wore #25 throughout his career.

Two more Yowlers ride into the sunset

Season 26 of the MLD saw a more rookie-heavy Yowlers team eek out a 107 point season - a big comedown from recent seasons, but still enough to edge Okanagan for the division title.  The team then surprised again by making it to the conference finals, losing a tough series to Iceland.  Two more players now hang up the skates, as the Yowlers prepare to re-tool again and try to pull out their 12th consecutive 100+ point season in year 27.

Career fourth-liner and perpetually gender-confused Guðmundsdóttir ends his tenure in Yorba Linda with no hardware and little to show.  Never the most gifted offensively or defensively, it was generally his engaging demeanor that endeared him to Yowler teammates and fans.  Originally recrutied out of the Icelandic Extra League after not being deemed good enough to make the MLD's Vikings, "Heidi" won over fans with his optimistic outlook on life, hard work in the corners, and finely-manicured nails.  He returns to his native Iceland, after a brief vacation in Thailand.  He wore #51 for Yorba Linda.

Elite defensive forward # 235,872 in Yowlers history, Ryan's career was actually tragically cut short when the team's coach and gm yogsloth accidentally left him in the lineup one extra day, causing him to play a 21 game season.  FRICK.  Anyway, Ryan was one of those players who saw use in season after season... his elite skillset meant that he was often warehoused to be played in critical games during the regular season.  Like so many other Yowler greats, however, Ryan always seemed to struggle in the playoffs.  Although he was used extensively as a penalty-killer (and later in his career, as a point man on the power play), he found it very difficult to translate that icetime into post-season success.  He was a three-time winner of the team's "Best Defensive Forward" award, from seasons 21-23.  (Markus Levy is the only other Yowler to ever win the award three times.)  Ryan wore #17 for the Yowlers.

Yowlers retire two more

For only the third time in franchise history, the Yorba Linda Yowlers suffered through the unthinkable and missed the playoffs.  After eleven consecutive seasons with over 100 points, the team finished 9th in the conference. In a cruel twist, even though they were amont the bottom four teams in the Prince Of Wales, the team didn't even get the benefit of a top-ten draft pick due to the generally horrendous nature of the Campbell Conference.  Two more Yowlers hang them up this season, as the team re-tools to try and reverse fortune.

Matomaa, best friends on the team with fellow retiree Achebe, provided the Yowlers with excellent secondary scoring over the course of his career.  Usually placed on the second or third lines, Andrew racked up four consecutive 20+ goal seasons and delivered quality two-way play.  He only racked up ten regular-season penalty minutes during his career, distinguishing himself with his gentlemanly play.  He was the team's "Most Improved" player in season 24.  He wore #19 throughout his career.

Born in one of the tougher neighborhoods of Lagos, Nigeria, Achebe found an escape through hockey.  Although he was never blessed with experienced coaching or quality competition, Achebe worked his way up through the Nigerian Extra Elite League and caught the eyes of Yowlers scouts.  Towering at 6'6" and 245 lbs, Achebe immediately brought a signficant physical presence to the team.  His offensive skills were always limited (he topped out at 33 points), but his ability to take the body and his elite scowl (which he reportedly spent years perfecting) always ensured him a place on the team's bottom six.  In fact, he played every single game in the immediate six seasons after being drafted.  His defensive skills improved consistently, and he even managed a +2 in the Yowlers catastrophic season 27.  Achebe took home the team's "Best Newcomer" award in season 22, and wore #60 in honor of his Nigerian heritage.

The team also announced they have released #38, Defenseman Adrien Vandenvai.

Yowlers fizzle out, fire three

MLD season 28 is in the bag,  and the Yowlers unfortunately squandered another 100+ point season with a quick first-round exit.  Three more players were handed their mandatory walking papers as a result.

Early in his career, Brady struggled to escape the shadow of his older brother Marshall, a regular player in the ECHL and AHL.  He certainly did that at the MLD level, however.  Jan Brady retires with a fairly incredible franchise resumé: #2 all-time in goals, #1 in assists, #1 in points, #1 in +/- (with a mind-blowing +452), and #1 in games played.  The only thing Brady lacked was playoff success, as all of the team's franchise players before him save Sparky Clemons.  He also won team MVP twice, and Oustanding Defenseman three times.  He wore #32 throughout his Yowlers career.  Although retired from the MLD, he is continuing to puruse a pro hockey career in the LEAL (Latvian Extra Awesome League).

Another player recrutied locally, Southern California native Felix Rodriguez became a fan-favorite during his stay with the team.  Although he never played at a high level of prep or junior hockey, his natural speed and enthusiasm ensured steady success in the MLD.  He won the team's "Best Newcomer" award his rookie season, and followed it up with a tremendous 36-goal sophomore campaign, for which he was named team MVP, a very rare feat for Yowlers forwards.  He wore #7 throughout his career.

The long and eventful career of eternal backup goalie Fabrell finally comes to an end.  Fabrell played a whopping sixteen seasons for the team, and was the last holdover from the team's last championship team in season nine.  Fabrell actually retires as the team's all-time wins and shutouts leader in the playoffs, having frequently been called to step in for struggling starters of the past.  Despite a dismal 1-7 streak to end his playoff career, he finishes with nine more victories than hall-of-famer Anton Boucher.  Fabrell shared the team's MVP award in season eight.  He wore #30 throughout his career.

Season 29 ends, Yowlers come close, but no cigar

After an impressive 121 point season, the Yowlers made it to their fifth MLD finals, but were sent home by the utterly dominating Kigoma Hippos in a swift and brutally-executed four-game sweep.  This off-season is particularly devastating to the Yowlers, as no fewer than eight players are forced into retirement.

Another in a rare breed of ultra-long serving MLD players, Sanderson played either in Yorba Linda or MLDML Anaheim Hills for a full twenty seasons.  Always blessed with tremendous speed and vision, Sanderson's small stature (5'8", 165 lbs) and propensity for injury meant he rarely was able to play a full season.  When he did, however, he was tremendous.  One of the greatest back-checkers in team history, he had a magical way of stealing the puck from opposing players and turning the play back into the offensive zone.  Never a real goal-scoring dynamo, Sanderson's skill lay in creating plays and setting up his teammates.  Incredibly, he actually retires as the franchise's all-time scoring leader among forwards!  An invaluable penalty killer, he also shares the team record for career short-handed goals in the regular season, and owns the record outright in the playoffs.  He won the team's "Best Defensive Forward" award three times, "Unsung Hero" once, and "Most Improved" once.  He wore #11.  He will be sorely missed by the team.

Tyson Sampson: the prototypical Yowler.  Dependable, responsible in both zones, talented, and workmanlike.  Sampson was a capable two-way forward who excelled in the faceoff circle and the offensive zone.  He never missed a game in his career, rattling off a 492-consecutive-games-played streak in this six MLD seasons.  He won only one team "Best Defensive Forward" award, but that is probably more due to the abundance of elite defensive players on the team, rather than a lack of ability on his part.  He wore #27 for the team and intends to continue his pro career in the SPHL.

Talented forward Clockare literally wrote the book on winning faceoffs.  A draft he has been working on for several years is set to be published later this year by Random House!  He averaged over 60% in the faceoff dot for his career, one marked with excellent two-way play.  Not only is Clockare second all-time in franchise points by a forward (a mere eight points behind Sanderson, above), but he also won one each of the team's "Best Defensive Forward", "Unsung Hero" and "Most Improved" awards.  He wore #45 for the team and retires to pursue a career in Sports journalism.

Few players have seen the kind of radical fortune-reversals as defenseman Guyette.  His rookie season he posted an incredible -100 season... and followed it up with a +90 season!  A highly-talented offensive defenseman, he was aquired by the Yowlers in season 25 to fulfil a role, and it was one that he played very well.  He won the team's "Most Improved" award in his final season, a testament to just how excellent a player he became over the course of his career, considering the sucess he had in both Henderson and Yorba Linda.  He was the team's best player during their season 29 cup run, and his contributions will be dearly missed.  He wore #6 after his trade to the Yowlers.

Mauz becomes the first player drafted during the brief one-season tenure the franchise was run by gm yogsloth's two young sons.  It was widely speculated at the time that the little sloths drafted purely by player name rather than talent or team need, but fortunately, they still managed to find some useful players.  German-born Mauz arrived with a resumé for offensive prowess and defensive liability, but managed to adapt succesfully to the team's defense-first mentality.  A strongly disciplined player, Mauz only racked up six PIMs in his six straight seasons with the team.  He was the team's "Unsung Hero" in season 28, as he scored an impressive 31 goals from the 3rd defensive pairing with little power-play time.  He wore #29 for the team, and returns to his native Germany to continue his career.

Another player drafted by yogsloth's two sons, Rogers came to the team with a reputation for throwing shields and fighting Nazis, rather than for any particularly effective hockey skill.  It was quite surprising, then, that he actually become a quality goal-scorer for the team, including a 36-goal campaign that ties for fourth-best all time in franchise history.  He also became a valuable sniper on the power play.  As his career wound on, he actually wound up diminishing in effectiveness, which frequently led to some issues between player and management.  Only adequate in the playoffs, like many Yowlers before him, Rogers probably won't be long-remembered by Yowlers fans despite his early regular-season success.  He did win the team's "Most Improved" award for the aforementioned 36-goal season.  He wore #40 for the team.  He has actually retired from hockey to join the army, for whom he will be engaged in some kind of top-secret medical testing as a human gunea pig.

Centerman Brett Tallichuk is a good example of a player who found his nitch.  Although not the most gifted offensively, he had an amazing talent for puck deflection - a skill not initially recognized by the team.  Once it was, he put it to good use in front of the opponent's net on power plays.  He retires 2nd all-time for the team in power-play goals in both the regular season and playoffs.  His four PP goals in the season 29 playoffs is actually a franchise record.  He won no team awards during his stay in Yorba Linda, but was always a valuable role-player for the team.  He wore #39.

Goaltender Varenko had a long and interesting journey to the MLD.  Originally drafted by the Yowlers several seasons before he came to North America, Varenko was actually a highly-regarded prospect for the KHL.  After only a few appearances, however, he decided to make the jump to North America.  It was immediately apparant he was in a class by himself, as he stepped into the MLD and domimated from the first moment he hit the ice.  His speed, agility, and unwavering determination made him a welcome addition to the team.  In his four full seasons with the squad, he averaged an incredible 48 wins.  He won the league's Calder award his rookie year, and easily seized the Vezina trophy his final season with 51 wins and an astounding post-deadpuck era 17 shutouts.  He is 2nd all-time for the franchise with 208 wins, which is also a record for post-rule-change, non-franchise-player goalies in the MLD.  He joins Polly Armstong as the only Yowlers goalies to record two different 50+ win seasons.  He also has a team "Best Newcomer" award, as well as an MVP trophy for his final, Vezina-winning season.  He wore #50 during his career, and retires back to Russian to continue his professional career.

Yowlers draft "World's most dangerous player"

After retiring eight full-timers at the end of season 29, the Yorba Linda Yowlers found themselves needing to use all six draft choices for the first time.  When the final round came up, after most MLD teams had gone home for the evening, Yowlers GM made a surprising choice, drafting Andre "The Bully" Buller.  Recently suspended by his former club, Vityaz Chekov of the KHL for "a violent nature incompatible with human life", Buller arrives with more than his fair share of baggage.

The only player ever banned for life from the LNAH, Buller has done more time in prison than on the ice, having been convicted of two separate manslaughter charges - both of which were eventually dismissed due to key witnesses suddenly changing their stories or experiencing sudden memory lapses.  His reputation for on-and-off-ice mayhem is legendary.  Most recently, he made headlines in the hockey world a year ago for beating up a team full of pee-wees during an informal pickup game after, as he said, "one a dem little bastards low-sticked me".  Eight children were taken to the hopital with moderate injuries.

In an even more curious move, Buller has been assigned uniform #99, "just to **** more people off", as he said during an impromptu press conference at the team's practice facility, where he apparantly has been in talks with the franchise for some time.  He then slugged a reporter, dropped his pants, and defecated on the left faceoff dot.

Time will tell what in hell Yowler's GM yogsloth was thinking on this one.

Yowlers execute trade with Aliens

Making their first trade in five seasons, the Yorba Linda Yowlers today sent assistant captain and defensive catalyst Vic Hordachuk (just announced to the all-star team) to the Roswell Aliens in exchange for RW Raymond Kaakinen.  A pair of picks also changed hands, as Yorba Linda's season 31 3rd-round draft pick went to Roswell, with Leningrad's season 31 2nd-round pick (previous aquired) coming back.

"First off, we want to thank Vic for his years with the team.  He has always been a consummate professional and a great teammate, and we wish him the best of luck in New Mexico," stated Yowlers GM yogsloth.  "We also want to emphasize to our fans that this should not be construed as 'throwing in the towel' on the season.  We've won seven of our last eight games, and after a tough start to the season, we feel we're going in the right direction.  We have every intention of not only making the playoffs, but of making life tough for whomever we meet, even if it's one of the conference front-runners.  This deal was entirely about asset management.  Vic is retiring after this season, and with the tough bout of retirements we went through after last season, we felt we needed to acquire some more young players in order to continue fielding as strong a team as possible.  As our fans know, we never 'tank'... we go for it every year!"

Q: Tell us about the newly-aquired player, Kaakinen.

"Well, we think he's a diamond in the rough.  He has only been able to play in Roswell during the last two seasons when they were rebuilding, so if you look at his production and plus/minus, it would take your breath away."  [Haakinen is a career -151 in 150 games played - ed.]  "He's got a great shot, though, and he's a big body, so we see him as a definite contributor for years to come.  His playmaking isn't his strength, but he's a guy who can go hard to the net and score the ugly goals.  We also managed to move up a few slots in the draft by flipping our 3rd round pick for Leningrad's 2nd rounder, which will also help while we rebuild our team's long-term core."

Kaakinen will be assigned #19.

Season 30 concludes, nobody retires

For the first time since the very early days of the MLD, the Yowlers do not face any forced retirements.  After a strong rebuilding season in which the Yowlers surprised many with 93 points and a first-round upset of Indianapolis, the team looks to ice essentially the same squad another year older and wiser for season 31.

The team does need to announce they have released forward Jake Palochuk and goaltender Jonathan Rodenburg.  Palochuk played briefly in season 30, wearing #38 for the team.  Rodenburg spent his lone year in the organization as the backup goaltender for the MLDML Anaheim Hills Anacondas and did not make an MLD appearance.

Season 31 in the books - Yowlers blueline loses two

The Yorba Linda Yowlers finished season 31 with a respectable 115 points, but suffered a 2nd-round defeat to the MLD cup finalists Encinitas.  The year marked the emergence of some quality younger players, but sadly sees the top two veterans on the blueline ride into the system.  Although the team isn't losing many players, this blow will certainly be felt.

Capable two-way defenseman Patsy Bergh leaves the team with a list of impressive accomplishments, but like every Franchise Player before him except Sparky Clemons, the most important accomplishment - the MLD cup - eluded him.  Under his leadership, the team visited the MLD finals for the first time in twenty seasons back in season 29, but suffered a swift and merciless defeat to Kigoma.  He played across an incredible 19-season span, spending a full season in the MLD during the deadpuck era, but then toiled for several years in the MLDML before coming back up and assuming a full-time roll.  He leaves as the team's 2nd all-time leading scorer, 3rd in +/-, and is the team's all-time leader in games played.  His team awards include one "Most Improved" trophy, three "Outstanding Defenseman", and two team MVPs.  He wore #22 throughout his career.  He retires after his long career to move into the scouting ranks.

Defenseman Daryl Ylara becomes the new Franchise Player.

Another of the players drafted during the brief GM tenure of yogsloth's two young sons, Ater was apparantly originally picked for his charming Southern accent and cable TV installation skills rather than any consideration for his one-ice talent.  Fortunately for the franchise, his talent proved to be prodigious, as he burst into the league as a rookie with a 26-goal, +30 effort.  His second season in the league would prove to be a tremendous strain for him, however, as he regressed to 10 goals and an unheard of (for the Yowlers) -50 rating.  He persevered, however, and became a stabile offensive force on the blueline.  HIs 108 career goals ties him for 2nd among all non-FP Yowlers defenseman.  He won the team's "Best Newcomer" award his rookie season, along with a "Most Improved" trophy for his impressive 70-point campaign his third year.  He wore #37 throughout his career.

Yowlers 100/100 goalie Goyette demands trade

After losing his starting position to backup Saku Tenkula, Yowlers starting goalie surprised the team by demanding a trade.

"At this point, I have no desire to be a backup at this point of my career.  If it's good enough for Luongo, it's good enough for me.  I just want to start.  Get me out of here," Goyette said through an interpreter, even though everyone knows he speaks English ******* well enough.  "I think I can carry the load for any team in the MLD, with my stamina and saving ability, I know there's nobody better in the league," he boasted before his agent hurriedly shushed him.

The demand has left the Yowlers scrambling, as without Goyette, they have only three goalies left in the system.

"Well, Tenks did pretty darn well for us after he took over the job," began team GM/coach yogsloth, "so we're prepared to go with him as our starter.  We may platoon our other guys until we get that figured out.  But we'll take a look for Pascal... he's a very talented goalie, and most teams would love to have a 100/100 guy with only 128:40:57 in time charged against his career.  We'll start looking right away.

In the meantime, Goyette is at home practicing with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens junior team.  Stay tuned to see how this develops...

Yowlers send disgruntled Goalie within division

Today, the Yorba Linda Yowlers executed a trade (21st in franchise history) to send holdout goaltender Pascal Goyette to divisional rival Okanagan.  Yowlers coach/gm yogsloth spoke about the deal.

Does that involve some risk, sending Goyette to the rival "Okie-pokies", as Yowlers' fans derisively call them?

"Well, yes, but sometimes you just have to make a good hockey deal and let the chips fall where they may.  We know we'll probably be seeing Pascal five or six times a year now, but you can't really let that steer you into a lesser deal.  We'll gain more via the assets we aquired than we'll lose in having to face a ******-off Frenchman for a few games, you know?"

Tell us about the return.

"Well, we're getting Okanagan's first-round pick this year.  We're planning to retire three guys this season, so that will be a big help.  Of course, it figures they'd get off to a really strong start this year, but even a late-first rounder will turn up a good player.  We'll probably need to target another goalie at that point to re-stock the cupboard.  We're also getting Jordon Popoff.  He's a real sharp kid who's been playing mostly in the MLDML for the last couple of years.  He's not necessarily the most highly-skilled player, but he plays an honest shift, sees the ice well, and plays very well defensively.  He's the type of guy we've always developed and played here in Yorba Linda.  He may not score a ton of goals, but he'll forecheck and cycle the puck back to the blueline with the best of them.  He'll spend another year in the MLDML - he just flew in to Anaheim Hills - but then we expect to have him on the big club next year."

Worth noting is that, according to reports that had leaked out earlier, Goyette had originally been traded to the New York Junk Yard Dogs - a deal that apparantly had actually been filed with the league before NY backed out.  Is that true?

"Well, let me put it this way.  Yes, there was a deal, and it involved a pretty good player coming back.  When we actually got to the altar, though, corbs was nowhere to be found.  We had the deal filed and everything and he just vanished.  I tell you one thing, I sure wouldn't buy a used car from that guy.  Or life insurance products.  Plus, I have it on good authority that he eats kittens."

Another first-round catastrophe, three more retire

Another typical year comes to an end in Yorba Linda: Another conference title with a smashing 113-point season; another first round collapse.  Fans begin to wonder what is wrong with the water in Yorba Linda come playoff time, as seemingly invincible players revert to Pee-Wee status.  Time to say goodbye to three more veterans...

The Finnish import Holopainen finishes his MLD career after a curious career arc.  His rookie season, he chipped in 22 goals, good for tops among all Yowlers forwards, and only one goal behind team leader and francise player Jan Brady.  He would never again achieve that total, however, instead developing a more all-around game and finally settling as a 2nd-line two-way forward.  He retires from the MLD and returns to his native Finland to pursue a career in minor-league hockey and underground depressive Black Metal.  He won no team or league awards.  He wore #12 throughout his career.

Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Worthington III was drafted straight from Whitey Academy in White Tower, Mass.  He discovered early in life a love for slumming it with the plebes playing hockey, and despite his father (Eustice Worthington II)'s strenuous objections, instead of pursuing a career in leisure, Eustice became a pro hockey player - and a pretty good one.  Never counted on to be a big scorer, he became another in a seeminlgy-infinite string of defensively-responsible wingers in Yowlers history.  He was named the team's "Best Defensive Forward" in season 30.  He wore #10 for the team.

Jurgen, nicknamed "The Swedish Meatball" by his teammates for his heavey accent and less-than-disciplined approach to fitness, spent most of his career on the 3rd and 4th lines in Yorba Linda.  Although always likeable and more than willing to tell jokes at the expense of his other European teammates, his career on the ice never really stood out.  The playoffs were always particularly unkind to him.  He wore #24 throughout his career.
