Yes, that was a typo. The 20.4 should be 17.5.

Guys, I understand the frustration. Right now the tiers are:
Usage% >= 32.5 = 8 points
Usage% 27.2 To 32.5 = 6 points
Usage% 22.1 To 27.2 = 4 points
Usage% 17.5 To 22.1 = 2 points
Usage% 13.7 To 17.5 = 1 point
Usage% < 13.7 = 0.5 points

As long as you have 10 points total, you're fine. Less than that incurs a penalty based on how far under you are. This penalty affects all offensive players equally.

Maybe I'm being picky, but 4 x 22% and 1 x 15% should not incur a penalty. You'd be looking at about 115+ pts per 48 I think.

Ah, no wonder your strange 22.1 cutoff in the newbie guide.

This should be changed to something more granular. The categories are simply too large. a 22.1 isn't close to the same shot creator as a 27.

Instead of a range with tiers why don't they just assign a certain amount of points for each usage percent number. Then slightly increase or decrease the usage points based on the size of the increase or decrease to the usage percentage.

As an example if 13.7% usage = 1 point then 13.8% usage = 1.1 points or perhaps even 1.05 points. 13.6% usage would be .95 usage points or .9 usage points.

Don't even list or show the usage percentages anymore just list the amount of usage points that that player had that season. Then if all of your players on the floor don't add up to ten usage points you would incur the penalty.

Adding up the usage points to me would make building a team easier than having to refer to the usage range tier scale. I always have to see how close to the penalty I am with my teams when I am building them.

I am in total agreement that 4 players @ 22% usage plus 1 player @ 15% usage should not incur a penalty.

I my idea too simple, not thought out enough, or just not doable? Or could it work awesomely?

This is one discussion that I feel is worth having.

different idea but along the same lines as you, vancem:

Forget the "points".

Add up the percentages. If the combined usage on the floor = 1 (or 100%), then you suffer no team possession penalty while playing half court. You suffer a moderate penalty for up-tempo.

If they add up to .9 (90%), then you suffer no possession penalty while playing slow-down. You suffer a moderate penalty for halfcourt and an extreme penalty for up-tempo.

If they add up to 1.1 (110%), then you suffer no possession penalty while playing up-tempo.

Simple addition. It'd make some players more (and some less) usable in my eyes and would change the self-imposed restrictions many owners put on themselves as to who to use, where and why - without making things "too easy" or simple.

I almost always have 110%+ usage out there anyway, so it wouldn't really effect me, but I'd be able to maybe feel more confident entering a league with a different type of lineup.

I would go further and suggest teams get a bonus to FG% when their usage is greater than say 120%.

With more creators and scorers on the floor, everyone gets better opportunities since the defense is much more stretched.

Example:

Team A has Kevin McHale at PF
Team B has Jeff Foster at PF

If you're a three-point specialist, which team will give you way more wide open looks? Despite McHale not getting many assists, just his ability to score forces defenses to play differently.

This could be offset (so scoring doesn't get way outta control) by an increased effect of high defensive ratings.

the last thing we need is ANOTHER bonus to fg%. Offense is already heavily favored over defense in this sim.

I would be in favor or something like this, except I think you should take into account both team's pace when determining if a penalty is going to be applied. For example, to avoid a penalty you need at least the following usage%: both teams uptempo - 110%, uptempo and halfcourt - 105%, both teams halfcourt or uptempo and slowdown - 100%, halfcourt and slowdown - 95%, both teams slowdown - 90%.
