DiPietro (groin) has been removed from the Islanders' injured reserve list, according to The Hockey News.

The move doesn't guarantee he's fully healthy. Instead, it's a move that's linked to finances -- the Isles would have to pay him through any lockout if he was still injured. And injured players cannot be bought out, something that has been rumored might happen if an amnesty buyout period were permitted under a new collective bargaining agreement. The Isles would save some $13.5 million over the life of his contract if they buy him out, but the team would absorb a cap hit of $1.5 million for each of the next 18 seasons (twice the time remaining on the deal). Yikes.

The good news is that he is playing.  The bad news is he is a loooooong term back up. Only 9 years left on his contract!

Goalies that catch with their right hand--- are very rarely good

The Islanders have given DiPietro permission to take the weekend to gather his thoughts, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple. Apparently DiPietro was stunned to find out he was shipped to the AHL (he might be the only one). He has very few options, so he will report to Bridgeport if he wants to collect his salary. The Islanders coaching staff lost faith in DP, and that is the reason he was waived. Now the question will be whether or not owner Charles Wang will authorize a buyout before next season begins.

The Islanders will buyout the remainder of DiPietro's contract, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.

Recommendation

The team will pay DP $1.5 million over the next 16 seasons but that will not count against the cap. This had to happen especially once the Canucks decided to hold onto Roberto Luongo and his enormous contract as Vancouver was the only possible destination for DiPietro in what would've been a bad contract swap.

I think this is either the last season for paying Yashin or this is the first year without him on the books. What ever it is it's good news for them
