I took over Vassar College to start season 13. I am likely to be at Vassar for a while. Although I'd never say never, I don't have much interest in advancing to higher divisions; I am a D3 alum and fan myself and Vassar is the alma mater of four of my relatives. So I hope to settle in and turn the Brewers into perennial contenders. (I also enjoy the nickname. The guy who gave the money to found the school owned a brewery, so they later named the teams after him.)

I've coached 34 seasons total in three different worlds, but that was all pre-potential. I will probably update this thread a few times this season while I am relearning the ropes. Once I'm comfortable I will probably update it a little less.

SEASON 13

Recruiting

I had to learn to recruit for potential, and at this point I can't be sure I did a good job. Based on players I was interested in after searching, I compared the value of sending my assistant on scouting trips vs. the cost of FSS; in every case this season, the former was the more cost-efficient choice. Then I read in the forums that you get better info. from your assistant anyway, so that seemed like the way to go.

But it is pretty frustrating that the assistant will only give you evaluations of potential in four different skill areas per trip. With two players who were relatively close, I sent the assisant out a second time; I got an eval. in one new category for one and zero new categories for the other (i.e. the evals were in the exact same categories he had given me the first time). So with a couple of players I eventually signed, I still have no data in one or two key areas. I decided to offer them scholarships because they seemed like the best players I was going to get anyway.

I started with three openings; when it looked safe to assume that I could sign five guys, I rescinded scholarships from a junior PF with a 16 REB rating, and a junior SF with something like 21/18 in ath/spd and few other redeeming qualities. Now at least I can develop more of my own guys sooner.

Change in potential

Whatif made a major change in potential during recruiting for Knight. It seems that players were "maxing out" by the end of their sophomore years, based almost entirely on potential and not on work ethic and PT. Now work ethic and PT will make more of a difference, and development will occur more slowly. This would seem like very good news for coaches whose rosters have rising sophs and juniors who improved at the old, quicker pace over the previous two seasons; it's less good news for coaches starting a rebuild right now. I still would have tried to sign as many new players as possible this season (even cutting those two juniors) to make a faster start on rebuilding, but now it seems more likely we will take serious beatings this year and next after five more graduations.

Here's our roster after one preseason game. We lost to a bad sim team 66-63. I didn't have the set up quite right as I had hurried to do it this morning, but the result was still a potentially ominous sign.

Piper, achampa1 = horsefan3277. Glad to see you in Knight; best of luck this season!

Small world! Good luck to you too.

And can you or anyone else tell me, if your asst. coach makes no observation about a player's upside in a category, does that mean "moderate"? It seems to make sense since his only observations are "big" and "limited" with nothing in between, and all the upperclassmen are "limited" in nearly every category, presumably having maxed out.

Well, obviously I updated this thread less than I had planned. It turned out that coaching once the season started was less different from my old experiences than I had thought it would be. The only real difference is allocating your practice minutes in light of potential, but that is not very hard (although it is very frustrating when a player is maxed out in core skills).

As for the season itself, it went much better than I expected. Vassar went 21-7, 12-4 and earned an at-large NT berth as an 11 seed. Then we made a surprising run to the Elite Eight before losing to eventual champ Eastern U., whose coach outfoxed me with his defensive game plan.

None of this would have happened without a lot of luck, including in my non-conf. schedule; I had a much stronger one than sim schedules usually are. And my team handled it better than I thought they would.

Details to follow . . . .
