A Face at the Window (1997) by Dennis McFarland, a ghost story that's about as well-written a genre novel that I've ever read. A little heavy on the Henry James influence at times, but overall a good read with both haunting and humorous passages.

Is that Kafka? (2012) by Reiner Stach is for hardcore Kafka fans only (of which I'm one). Stach took time off from writing his three-part bio of Kafka to put together these 99 brief collage-like chapters which show (usually via letters or diary entries) sides of Kafka that most have never seen, such as his weird adherence to the exercise regimen of a Danish fitness guru.

Honey (1993) by Elizabeth Tallent. Good collection of short stories, subtle, smart and realistic and dealing mainly with marriages/relationships. If you're a fan of short story writers like Charles Baxter, Lorrie Moore or Mary Gaitskill, you should give the lesser-known Tallent a shot.

a book that was heavily influenced by Kafka is The Tenant by Roland Topor......made into a masterpeice film by Roman Polanski......Kafka meets edgar allen poe or early clive barker.......if you see this movie or read the book you will not forget it...the movie is slightly different from the book but captures the atmosphere perfectly.....polanski plays the tenant.....eerie and disturbing.
I just finished The Tenant -- I agree with dino27's description. Creepy but enjoyable and pretty fast-paced, too.
