Caffeine is a legal stimulant so it isn't banned. And yes, players use a TON of caffeine because it also enhances performance, just to a lesser degree than amphetamines.

If you read the drug agreement you'll see that drugs like weed and heroin are grouped separately as drugs of abuse. Major league players aren't tested for them unless there is probable cause. Amphetamines, on the other hand, are not in that group and players are tested for them in the same way that they are tested for steroids--everyone in spring and then some players randomly throughout the season.
Have you ever taken amphetamines on a regular basis?
No. Just on occasion. There is plenty of evidence that amphetamines enhance performance.

Earlier you said all stimulants were banned. You admit you were wrong about that?
If I said that I misspoke. I meant amphetamines.

Gordon also was the number two overall pick the year he was drafted, behind Price. Guys like that get all the chances in the world. Look at how long Phil Nevin and Paul Konerko took to get established.

Also, am I the only one concerned that Gordon, who had done squat in the majors for four seasons, had a breakout year the same year Melky Cabrera joined the team?

David Lough is not that highly touted, nor that talented. What you have is a guy hitting his peak on a team that had a vacancy for him. Nothing more. It's telling he's probably the one who doesn't make the team this year.
It all started with this. Remember your history......

Royals looking to get a Santana. Ervin or Johan.

Not interested in Tanaka?

Nope. Ervin or Johan.

no wonder third place in the central felt like winning a world series.

To Dayton Moore, yes. Take into consideration when we were last in the playoffs.

Something like that. The curse of the Brett.

Wow. 6 WHOLE months older. What a DIFFERENCE!!!  And Holland isn't even the best closer in MLB. That would be Kimbrel or Uehara last season. Now let's see. Who would you take? A rotation of Shields, Guthrie, Vargas, Duffy and Davis or a rotation of Verlander, Scherzer, Sanchez, Fister and Porcello? The Royals have lost Santana and Chen and added Vargas, hardly what anyone would call an improvement. It's not even close man, so stop already. You're just drinking blue kool-aid.
PLAYER W L ERA BB K
Santana 9 10 3.24 51 161
Chen 9 4 3.27 36 78
Vargas 7 2 3.25 25 71
Duffy 4 5 2.83 22 42
There's an improvement...
TEAM ERA BB K AVG WHIP
Royals 3.75 204 509 .254 1.30
Tigers 4.22 209 513 .260 1.35
Hmmm......

The point being, Holland is overvalued. He'll never recreate last season again.
Holland had a 1.21 ERA. This year 1.35. He leads the league with 21 saves.
