When your pitching staff has blown only 4 saves (out of 22 save opps) 71 games into a season, you don't expect to read this in your boxscore:

Dwight Gooden 100 7.2 4 1 1 2 12 1 124 1.82
Jeff Lahti 100 0.1 1 0 0 1 1 0 14 4.37
Ken Dayley, BSV (1) 100 1.2 3 2 2 0 2 1 22 3.60
Bill Campbell, BSV (3) 100 0.1 1 0 0 0 0 0 6 2.63
Danny Cox, BSV (2) 100 0.2 1 1 1 1 0 1 14 5.22
Doug Bair 100 0.1 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 7.24
Neil Allen, L (0-5), BSV (1) 0 0.1 5 4 4 1 0 0 26 27.20
Game Totals 86 11.1 15 8 8 5 15 3 209 ---

Okay, that last pitcher was clinically deceased even before he was dumped onto the mound from a wheelbarrow, but still.  We scored a run in the 10th, a run in the 11th, and three runs in the 12th -- and still insisted on losing.  Four blown saves -- in one game!

in a 1919/1979 progressive Gavvy Craveth has 11 HR (12HR in 254 AB in RL) in 80 AB

believe it or not
250AB's into the season 1919 Gavvy has a pretty impressive stat line (RL - 12HR in 254AB-

23HR, 63 RBI,  .327AVG/.436OBP/.677SLG

he's currently tied for 10th in the league in HR - tied with 1979 Mike Schmidt (RL 45 homeruns).

Not a bad end to the great career Gavvy has had with our squad. Even with only 7 full time seasons - he's in the top 20 in career statistics for a 1901/1961 league that is in it's 20th season.

Chick Fewster just had a 2 home run game for me, in a 1923 progressive.  He hit the home runs against rested pitchers.  He hit the home runs in a park that's -2/-2 for home runs.  And he hit the home runs despite hitting 0 home runs in real life!

I've got 1985 Doc Gooden and 1985 John Tudor in a 90M theme, 106 games into the season.  In my mind these two pitcher seasons have always gone hand in hand, with roughly the same number of innings (277-274 for Gooden) and quality (ERC# 1.92- 1.93, again for Gooden).

Tudor has been good for me, currently 5th in Cy Young voting with a 3.18 ERA and 13-7 record.

Gooden costs just over $1M more.  So, what does that extra mil get you?  Gooden's the Cy Young leader, his ERA's 1.85, and....he's 20-0!

Back-to-back games from my OL team. One quality start from a horrible pitcher ($200K 1902 Archie Stimmel):

And one horrible start from a quality pitcher ($8.1M 1905 Doc White):

Dept. of Did Not Know When to Fold 'em

2002 single-season prog, and my slightly above-average starter Kenny Rogers (ERC+ 108) is on the mound in the 4th inning of a 0-0 game. The opponent is not a powerhouse (2-4 record, one of the lowest salaries in the league). Rogers starts off the inning swell, and then...

11 consecutive hits!

Another "gem" (more or less) from a 200K pitcher on my OL team:

Like Archie Stimmel in the post above, Bishop took Player of the Game honors.

The icing on the cake? The opposing starter/loser was Mr. Open League himself:

Did you forget Floyd Youmans even existed?  I sure did.  Anyway, I wound up with 1986 Youmans in SpotSell's 1976-92 Pick Six league.  Youmans and 1985 Charlie Hough were slated as my top 2 starters.   If you know anything about Pick 6 themes, you'd know we were doomed from the get-go.  Since I figured we were sunk anyway, I chose Mile High as our stadium, so there'd at least be some fun boxscores to look at.  Well...

Hough has performed about as well as I expected.  Thru 126 games he's 9-10 with an ERA of 6.81.

Youmans, whose real life stats are in the same ballpark as Hough's quality-wise (ERC#'s 2.69 and 2.71, in favor of Hough), has performed a bit better.  He just won the pm2 game, which put my team at 66-60 and a 3-way tie for the wild card.  This is a happy place for us, since we were about 10 games out of the wild card as recently as the all-star break.  Youman's ERA is a very respectable (considering the park) 3.38, and he's currently the Cy Young leader.  What's more, the pm2 win was Youmans' 20th in a row -- he started out 1-1 and is now 21-1

Youmans can't lose! In the pm game he took the mound in the 6th in long relief, with his team trailing 6-0. He closed out the game, and got the win -- his 21st straight -- thanks to a 7-run explosion in the bottom of the 9th!

Incredible 3-team battle for the division in a 90M theme league!  Shades of the great NL pennant race of 1908?

Updates from a 90M theme I'm in (0soup4u's Best 90M Team) that just wrapped up Game 162:

1. The three teams in the previous post all finished 74-88; there will be a couple of play-in games.

2. Three other teams in that league -- also NL, but from the other two divisions -- finished in a 3-way tie for the wild card; there will be a couple of play-in games.

3. My pitcher Doc Gooden, who I mentioned had won 23 straight games before finally losing one, got a win in the final game to finish up 26-1.
