After further Googling, the plot thins!  Big Jeff apparently got his nickname because he resembled the heavyweight boxer James J. Jeffries.  Fair enough.  Along comes regular Jeff a few years later -- still known as Ed.  Since Ed resembles his brother, he's given the same nickname.  Presumably, if his brother had still been going by Frank, Ed would have been known as Frank, too.

Because the "freakanomics" of fielding a team that steals an extremely high amount of bases is that the Sim overvalues speed in this aspect and will give you a team that virtually doesn't hit into double plays, the theory that you need a sucess rate of at least 75 percent of your stolen base attempts for SB's to be advantageous to you doesn't apply to Simleague baseball..( I've fielded a similar team to the one I have now (The smoke and mirrors offense) where the double plays (GIDP) just don't happen.....Believe it or don't.

Staving Off Elimination Dept.

Game 6 of a 1983 prog LCS. My team, Toronto, is down 3 games to 1 to Kansas City. We enter the bottom of the 9th down 9-3. Two of the first three batters make outs. Down by 6 runs, two outs, 1 man on. Looking pretty bleak...

The age old WIS question: Is it good or bad to head into the playoffs on a hot streak?  My OL team just wrapped up its regular season with a 32-7 run.  Harbinger of doom, or merely a taste of what's to come?

Neither!  The team finished out of the playoffs with 90 wins --10 games out of first and 3 back of the wild card!

Always Be Closing
(But if you can't get a save, at least take the loss!)

Unusual season from 1986 Todd Worrell (ERC# 2.96) in an 80M theme league.  He was his team's closer, and was not misused -- he did not pitch tired or with a high pitch count.  He had 30 saves, which was 8th best in the league.  But he also blew 18 saves (2nd worst blew 10) and had an ERA of 6.61.

Even worse was Worrell's W-L record ... 3-25!

i am playing redwingscup in the playoffs in razorclams 20 game losers theme, in the regular season redwings team hit 194 HR's and my winningest pitcher 42 jim tobin gave up 56 HR's  so there's no way i want him pitching in this series right.  I set him to rest along with 3 others and we start the first game in the bottom of the 9th in the first game i run out of pitchers and sure enough sparky puts in tobin.  Not only does he pitch 2.1 innings of hitless ball but he hits a walk off HR in the bottom of the 11th nice

In the AM game from a 1926 prog, my New York Yaks had to make a 2-out comeback in the bottom of the 9th to pull out the win.  It would have been kooky if we'd lost, considering the hit totals:

We not only out-hit them 21-5 -- we out-homered them 1-0!

We got 1-hit by Bob Gibson in a 1966 prog game.

And we won 2-0, our only hit a 2-run homer by Tony Conigliaro !  Claude Osteen gets the win for the NY Crocodiles (my daughter picked the team name) - Osteen, not Gibson (or Tony C.) is player of the game.
