Season 58

I thought I'd start a thread to track the Missouri Valley Conference.  I'll start it out with my quick take on what I think the conference hierarchy will be for this season.  Westcoast22 and daveredden are taking over Western Kentucky and Gardner-Webb this season and have started a nice rebuilding process with big recruiting classes.
  1. Illinois State – The Birds return all 12 players from last year and, in my opinion, be the team to beat  in the MVC this season.  Last season they were a young team and O/D IQ held them back, but that will not be as much of an issue this year.  This is far and away the deepest team in the league, and will only get better in the next couple seasons as that monster sophomore class improves
  2. Bradley – The Braves are fairly a fairly well balanced team, returning ten players.  The biggest concern for them would be lack of rebounding.  They are solid in all areas, aside from rebounding, but not great at anything.  The biggest strength will be team IQ with all SRs and JRs with A’s in both offense and defense.
  3. SIU – The Saluki Dogs have the benefit of having Samuel Gary, who may be the best player in the MVC this season.  Rebounding ability up and down the lineup will be a strength.  Point guard play will be a weakness, as Juco recruit Anthony Williams will either be in jail or will have an adjustment period until his IQs are adequate.
  4. Drake – Simmy has a lot of JRs that have decent ratings.  They will be a team that gets cursed at like the stupid Sycamores did last season.
  5. Western Kentucky – With six freshmen in this recruiting class, WKU will go through some growing pains.  They return a couple solid contributors from last season.  Easing the freshmen into the lineup at the beginning of the season without being exposed too badly will be a challenge.
  6. Creighton – See WKU.  Returning no guards will be painful.  Goal for the season will be to have freshman improve as much as possible, and taking the lumps.
  7. Spud-Webb – With daveredden Creaning a couple of the returning players, the Spuds bring in a huge eight player recruiting class, six of which are freshmen.  Growing pains for a couple seasons.
  8. Missouri St. – The Bears return their best scorer, Milton McKinsey.  They have good team BH and P, so they won’t turn the ball over a lot.  They will be one of the better Sims in the conference.
  9. Northern Iowa – They don’t return a lot of offensive firepower, but there are a bunch of seniors there with decent ratings.
  10. Wichita State – The Shockers return everyone from a bad team.  There are some decent pieces to the team, but not much.
  11. Evansville – The good news is they lost one player from last season.  The bad news is they returned eleven.
  12. Indiana St. – The Smores are awful.

Here are my recruits for this season:
ATH     SPD     REB     DEF     SB     LP     PER      .BH     P     STA     DUR
Robert Howard - SF - #217 Overall, #45 SF          41          40-     56          55        66     57+     13+     32      41     62+     64+
Harold Hartman - PF - #130 PF                               66          35       50+       55+      50+   65+     11+     24+    15+   65       59

Howard is just a guy.  Didn't have a lot of money to spend, so I went cheap with the SF and got him.  I'm excited about Hartman...I think he should be a good one.

Great idea, Brad.  Thanks for getting this started.

The Saluki dogs recruited 2 transfers this season.  Both know the offense and defense.  The plan is for them to add depth and play sparingly.  To rectify my atrocious balance of classes I sought out juniors specifically, since I had none under scholarship.  Of my 4 upperclassmen, only one will play serious minutes--that's the aforementioned Gary.

Juco transfer Anthony Williams, a balls-to-the-wall competitor with a 3.8gpa, will play a lot early in the season.  He'll provide good support at the point, especially against he press.   As the season progresses, sharpshooting frosh PG Phillip Reinhold (#88) will begin to take his minutes.

Our third recuit is Bobby Eicher, an Ohio State Buckeye transfer who will provide versatility and depth at the 3 and the 4.

And finally, the Salukis welcome non-qualifier Robert Fuller to the hardwood.  Fuller will garner significant minutes and intends to make Cameron Tone his bizatch for the next four seasons.

Here are my recruits.  Romano is international so I am not fully sure on all of his potentials.  I will update those when the rollover happens tonight.  As you can see, each of my recruits have a weakness or two that I couldnt avoid.  I hate Carter's BH and P being low as well as Lacoste's REB being low, and Wells LP being low.  They are not perfect, but I think this is a great start to a SIMMY controlled team.  I don't forsee this being a dominant class by any stretch but it's a good place to start.

Go Hilltoppers!

I think Banks will be a stud once his high pot. in per. goes up.  Tough to guard a SF with 82 LP and probably 80 PE.  Right now Angulo looks like he could be another Joseph Booe, once his per. and speed go up.  All recruits have high DE pot. something I lacked last season, basically just wanted to out score people.  Will focus more on def.  Overall good class just young.

That is a nice crop of C's, westcoast.

Maximo Romano is the second best name in the conference, surpassed only by George Gooch.

From Bulldog to Saluki Dog?
Rivals (Staunton, IL)

Andrew Castiglia, the 6'9" Senior big man for the hometown Bulldogs says it straight-out :  "I'm a dogg."

Over a pizza-pie at Cavataio's, he spoke of little other than his Tweets about "Bein' Silly."

He's a mysterious fellow, often speaking in parables.  But, when speaking of his love for the night life, Castiglia was direct like a laser beam.  "Carbondale . . . . damn."
