I would like to be considered for an expansion team.
I was so looking forward to the 1971 season with the team I built during the 1970 draft.
Owning the first pick I selected Oakland A's Vida Blue who had a monster sophomore WhatIfSports Sim season.
The initial salary cap prior to Expansion was $ 90 Million, and was lowered to $ 85 Million after Expansion.
The League had a contentious process to proceed with a 1969 Expansion Draft, so one of the compromises was to proceed with a 1970 Expansion one season after Real Life expansion. My team that I had drafted wasn't able to be a perennially strong contender. The roster which couldn't get under the cap in 1971, would get in under the cap with $ 15 Million + to spare in 1972.
My Team was hoping to use my 1971 top pick to draft rookie Dusty Baker with his near $ 200,000 rookie salary. Just missed getting Baker and took an expensive Paul Splittorf as my first round draft choice.
Splittorf could replace some of the quality pitching I would likely need to trade. After the 1971 draft we were over the cap by $ 10 Million as I remember it. I just couldn't keep the team I built under the cap without selling key players off.
I saw 4 of the ten pitchers in the top 5 for the two League Cy Young Awards would have pitched for me before I had to cut salary to enter a team under the cap. We were only able to keep two of the four.
I had drafted Houston's Don Wilson, as well as Dave Roberts and Ray Sadecki to join Baseball's standout pitcher that season, Vida Blue, with over 300 Innings Pitched. The team finished with about 93 wins as I remember it.
