How likely?    He needs 4 seasons at 174 each.    He's failed to get that many twice in his career(DL trips in both seasons).    2 years left on his deal so he'd have to sign another contract.    American League, DH more.

PETER H. ROSE(RESPECTS THE HELL OUT OF JETER) SAYS "HE AINT TOUCHING MY RECORD"

Only if ARod can hook him up with some good 'roids

I think the record is out of reach.  He'd have to play at least 6 more seasons at the same level he's at now.  I don't see that.    I don't even see him catching Cobb.   But 4000 seems feasible if he's willing to play 5 at a diminished skill level.    He might be able to get it in 4 but that's assuming a lot.

I don't think he'll get the at bats to do it. Once he can't play short anymore (now?), where does he go? LF? DH? That's not exactly a "Yankee" caliber bat in LF (but definitely an upgrade over that POS Ibanez) or at DH.

Look what happened last time they tried to work out an extension. Jeter will be 40 and demanding $40M because he's almost at 4,000 hits. And the Yankees will say "Buh buy captain!"

Yeah.  He sure looks good in that KC uni, doesn't he?   Oh, what?  They did work out a deal despite everyone insisting they wouldn't?

There is value in keeping him around if he can get to 4000.    Same reason A-Rod got the long-term deal.   He was expected to beat Bonds.

As far as a "Yankee bat", a DH hitting .300 is something they haven't had in awhile.    Did you see how many AB Chavez, Jones and Ibanez got this season?  I won't even mention the guys' names you don't know.

True, Chavez, Jones, and Ibanez got a lot of ABs this year. But that's not the plan going forward is it? If it is, then maybe 41 year old Jeter at DH is a better option. If I'm a Yankee fan, that would scare the **** out of me.

Dh is designed for the old guy you don't want in the field.   They traded their next DH to Seatlle.   Posada retired.   A-Rod will get some DH AB.   As you can tell over the last few years, the Dunns, Damons and Thomes still have a spot on a team but they're not getting the 4y/63m deal anymore.   Would the Yanks pay Jeter 12m to DH?  I don't think so.  But he may not ask for that much.

And, again, it's a moot question if he doesn't get 300+ over the next two years of his current deal.

DH is not just a throw away spot at the end of the lineup. It's supposed to be a big bat. And it should be a relatively easy bat to find since the guy can have zero defensive value. It's not where you stick your 40+ former SS to bat .290/.330/.390. That's how you lose.

You might want to look up DH stats over the last few years.

Since the big steroid era, you don't have a lot of .300, 30 homer guys in the game.    Production is production.  If it's in the form of 290/.330/.390, that's what it is.

And, for the record, those numbers are 1-2 spot numbers for most teams not throwaway at the end of the line-up.

Over the last three years only four qualifying DH's have posted slugging percentages under .400 - Michael Young, Jesus Montero, Hideki Matsui, and Bobby Abreu.

If that's what you want from your Yankee DH...
