Managing a 6 man staff Topic

A lot of guys post advice on building a pitching staff that have defined roles with set inning requirements.   I see all the time some like:

800 ip for starters
150 ip for Long A
100 ip for setup
50 ip for closer

and while I think you can win with that strategy, there is certainly more than one way to skin a cat.

I recently finished a progressive team with only 6 good pitchers. I had a little under 1200 "quality" innings and played in Fenway.  I put them as starters 1-6 and clicked the "pitch in relief box".   I also had three chumps set to mop up.  Here are the results.

The 89 wins were especially impressive considering that two teams in this division each won 104 games (16 team league). Trust me, I got sick of seeing those same 6 names every game. Good job juggling the fatigue all season.

That's the beauty Frazz, I didn't do anything.   I literally just set them up 1-6 and let it ride all season.

I probably should have put Collins on mopup and Hebert on Rest to get him to be the first guy in but I didn't have time to manage that.

I went a little light on IP overall, but was playing in Petco with good defense, so I felt I could take some chances. I ran Moore, Beattie and Bankhead in a Starter 1, 2A, 2B rotation, and other than resting them a little down the stretch by letting Stoddard start 6 or 7 games, I let them just run all season. This team also finished with 89 wins and is now facing one of frazzman's teams in the WS.

Glad I can be the test-dummy on y'alls wacky rotations. Now stop beating me with them and everything will be fine!

11/28/2012 6:19 PM
Yeah, there are plenty of ways to do it.   I have offered the IP suggestions to those who needed help, and it's a good place to start.
11/28/2012 7:44 PM
when I have low IP starters I'm always shuttling them between the rotation and the bullpen, and down to AAA to free up a roster spot.
