Dear people from Canadia,

Is your healthcare system better? I watched this video and it seems to suggest that socialism doesn't work too well after all.

I can tell you as a Canadian that our universal healthcare system is in many ways umpteen times better then Americas.  However to be fair the opposite is true in other ways.  For one if we get sick up here we arent going to go in the poor house like millions of Americans would.  However from what I understand if you have the money (or an excellent HMO) you can get service much quicker down there.

But when it comes to emergency service Canada is as good as any country yours included.  If you come in with a GSW up here you will be taken care of immediately, of course you will be asked a million and one questions when you are out of intensive care, but the key is you wont go broke up here.

I live here, and that report looked like near complete bullshit to me.

But what do I know. My wife, the nurse, must have been bs'ing me the past 10 years.

If you want cheap medicine, Canada is better.  If you want the best surgeon when you go under the knife you can't beat the USA.  Strong pointers to be made for either system, but there's something to be said for the general availability of preventative care.

It's like anything else: If you're wealthy you can buy whatever you want because modern American capitalism is set up to support the desires and goals of the wealthy.

If you're anyone else besides the wealthy (or incredibly well insured, which all too often are the same people), then Canada's system is better for you.

That's oversimplification, but true nontheless.

according to PBS 44 million DONT have health insurance, and another 38 have inadequate insurance.  That doesnt sound like almost everyone to me Swamp.  That sounds like nearly a third of Americans have insurance issues.  There is also a major problem you guys have called "pre-existing".  Good luck getting both reasonably priced and comprehensive health insurance down there if you have any major pre existing problems.

Then there is the amount you guys spend per capita on healthcare 17.4%!!! up here our number is at 11.4%.  The next highest country after the USA is the Netherlands with 12%.  How is it that you guys spend so much more then every other industrial nation on healthcare and not have universal healthcare like every other major industrialized nation.  Id really love it if those of you guys who like to crow about how great US healthcare is just sit down and look at the facts and actually get mad at how you all are getting shafted.

And we do spend more. That cannot be argued.

Some of that is casued by government regulations and the massive amount spent because of America's tort laws.

2 Areas the government could address without costing money or forcing anyone to do anything.

Of course the left would never allow that.

More power for the trial lawyers and the Central Government.

Or 8 million.

I would be willing to bet there are more than 8 million uninsured in California alone-I would believe the 8 million myth if it came from a more politically "neutral" site that The America Spectator

After operating under the name The Alternative: An American Spectator for several years, in 1977 the magazine changed its name to The American Spectator because, in editor Tyrrell's words, "the word 'alternative' had come to be associated almost exclusively with radicals and with their way of life."

Almost everyone in America is inusred.

This isn't true at all. There are millions of people who don't have any health insurance and far more still who are vastly under-insured (meaning their insurance isn't really worth what it should be in terms of actual care).

There wouldn't be much of an issue with health care if "almost everyone" actually were insured.
Good luck getting both reasonably priced and comprehensive health insurance down there if you have any major pre existing problems.

The entire idea of "pre-existing" is BS nonsense designed so that insurance companies can **** people over, which is their goal as a means to the end of making more money. Their main way of doing this is to sell you "coverage" and then if you ever have any claims to  find as many ways to lessen what they pay out as they can, including technicalities and small print and every other trick in the proverbial book.

I find insurance of any kind to be a necessary evil at best and an unnecessary monster at worst. You should be able to pay a premium and KNOW EXACTLY what you're going to be getting before there is ever a claim -  with no haggling, no small print, no debate over what is covered and isn't. As long as you paid the premium, they are legally obligated to pay X amount with no way around it.

Until that happens, insurance companies are just legalized con-artists who pull a version of the classic "bait and switch" scam over and over again to make profits. This is most insurance companies: "Pay us this premium and see how great our insurance is - what's that you have a claim well we don't pay out on that for reasons A,B, and C, and if somehow we did pay a small portion of it you'd only get this little amount because of reason D. You paid a premium in good faith thinking you'd be protected, but now that cat is out of the bag and you find out we don't cover you right when you need it and we don't care about you just about making money. Go **** yourself because we don't care if you live or die or suffer or what happens to you as long as we make money."

Universal healthcare is one of those things that makes so much sense that the U.S. can't possibly adopt it because that would ruin our reputation as the nation that is so powerful it can "afford" to make ridiculous decisions like not having universal healthcare - except the U.S. can't afford it, or at least those without insurance can't.

the issue that conservatives lack comprehension of is that most hospitals will STILL see a patient, whether or not they have insurance-if not, they'll bill the patient, who more often than not, won't be able to pay

when the patient doesn't pay, then the rest of us pay through higher costs, placed on us because the hospital needs to recoup their losses-those better off are going to subsidize those that aren't, however you slice the pie

The truth is the truth even if it doesnt come from a left wing supported source.

How many of the uninsured in California are not US citizens.
