if the player picks to become free agent, am i on the hook for the salary?? i would think not but wanted to check first

You're talking about if a guy clears waivers and refuses a demotion to the minors, opting to "become a free agent"?

He's trying to force you to release him.  You'd still be on the hook for salary, as with any other release.

Nope.  There are no "free outs" of an unwanted contract.
