I just took over a team in Hawaii, I'm unsure about what FSS states I should scout as I'm thinking it's going to cost a lot to give kids from say Texas campus visits, Am I right?

Some Hawaii coaches rely on international players

Alaska is also a decent option, since anyone other than the Alaska teams would have high costs as well, putting you on even ground.

The previous coach had a player from Spain but it seems that most international players are 3,000-5,000 miles away.

yeah, but they are that far away for everyone, so at least you negate any distance disadvantages.

This may not end well.

Real life coaching in Hawaii is probably very nice.  In HD, you get all the headaches of the remoteness without the benefit of the nice weather.

I looked at the three DII teams in Rupp, all of which are human-coached.   There are 13 Hawaiians on the rosters. The other players are from all over, with only California and Connecticut having multiple signings.

In Naismith, with only one human coach, he has 8 local boys, 1 from California, and 3 internationals.

I don't think there's any way  you can compete for the top players from the mainland. I'd go for the top local boys, take a chance on some internationals, and look at the mainlanders on the morning of signing day.. By  then, most of the mainland coaches will have sewed up their choices and you'll have less competition for the 'best of the rest'.

local guys, protect your borders at all costs. you might be able to pick a guy from Cali or AK, but i wouldn't count on it. Intls are great, but all you do is get on equal footing, no advantage.
