Minor-League Playoffs Effect on Player Development Topic

Announcements that a minor-league team has made the playoffs include a vague statement about a benefit on players once they reach the majors: "Looks like our season is going to last a little longer -- we reached the AAA playoffs as the #3 seed! This will be some great experience for some of our young guys and should definitely pay off once they reach the big leagues. You can follow our games using the Playoff Brackets page. Wish us luck!"

What is this benefit? How does it "pay off once they reach the big leagues"?

The most significant factor in player development is playing time. More playoff games, more playing time. Theoretically, your prospects should develop a bit more with additional playing time.

But it's cool to go 4-140 man! I can't be bothered by those minor league scrubs!!!

So is playing time during the regular season and playing time during the playoffs "equal" with regard to development?

I would assume so.

If you make the league championship you might see an extra round of development on some players. At most, it's a point here or there. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't seem to be worth putting too much effort into trying to win a MinL championship. Regular season playing time and probably coaching have a bigger impact.

If your team plays a full playoff schedule, that's an extra 24 games.  That's an extra 16% of their season.

Yup, I also make sure legit prospects get PT in ST for the same reason.
