I'm at a D3 school, called a D2 recruit early and got the backup message.  Couple of cycles later a D2 school was on him.  Now we're a couple of cycles after signings and the D2 school is no longer on the recruit.  Does the fact a D2 school was on him for a period of time affect whether or not he is likely to drop to me?

I don't think so but I wouldn't  bet on it.   Drop downs are a bit of a crap shoot.   The guy you want to drop down may not but there usually is someone similar who does.
