3 studs to pick from and I have the #1 pick... Topic

I have 18 college and 20 high school and the #1 pick in one of my worlds (I did a replacement last season there and decided to stick around).  The 3 guys I am looking at are all monsters, and am having a tough time deciding which one.  Well mostly its between a 3bman and a SP with a SU guy getting honorable mention.  The 3Bman is a SS, but his defense isnt quite there, but as a 3Bman he is a GG candidate every year.  Id like to see what you all have to say about these 3...

1st 3Bman:
batting line (proj)
100 87 86 81 78 67

85 dur 100 health 95 makeup 73 spd.  The guy is going to be a major stud.

heres the SP:

pitching line: 83 99 68 91 88 83 86 80 75 0 0
thats right 99 control with 91 vsR  also a major stud.  dur sta of 34/83 78 health 97 patience 81 makeup.

heres the RP:

37 100 97 89 94 72 90 78 54 0 0

89 VSR 90 1st pitch, this guy is insane.  But hard to take a RP with 1st overall eh.  his dur sta is 85/37.  Almost good enough to use as a tandemB and have him pitch every other day.  93 health 96 patience 99 makeup.  overall of 91!!! the highest rated RP I have ever seen.
Talk about an embarassment of riches eh!  This is a tough decision, but I am leaning towards the SP.  And maybe even the RP with the possibility of using him as a tandem B pitching every other day.  though 37 is a bit low I could set him up with a what, 50 max pitch count???
One more bit of info the RP is undecided to sign...

Any thoughts?

Take the RP out of the equation. 1 and 2 are both studs. You can't go wrong either way. You didn't say if those guys were HS or college. In this case, I would take a college player over a HS. Also, where do your team batting and pitching stats compare to the rest of the league? Since they are both studs, maybe draft where you need the most help? Just my opinion.

Always take the pitcher.  Don't even need to look at the ratings.   Pitchers are effective into their late 30s.   Position players start to decline before you get your 10-11 years of guaranteed playing time.

Take the Ace,  Mike hit it on the head.

Where are they now?

I'm leaning towards SP as well, but if the RP is significantly closer to the projections or equally distant but a younger prospect, I think there's a strong case for the RP too.

The problem with the RP, and the reason I wouldn't use the #1 overall on him, is that you have to "work" to get him his innings.   Miss a cycle or a day and you lose 8-10 innings from him.  Do that 2-3 times a season and he's short 25-30 innings.

I used Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Matt Christensen as a tandem B in the 2nd half and pretty much doubled his innings in 20 less games.    But, as I said, you have to work at that.    I estimate I could get 170-180 innings from him if I did that all season.

what's the patience on the hitter.  What is their signability?

All being equal, I'm probably going to take the pitcher every day.  Throw on top of that, the pitcher is projected to a 97 patience, that means he's always going to be willing to resign, which means he'll never test the market, which means you'll have a player someone in your world would likely extend a max contract to, that will sign for around $9 mil a season w/o testing the market.  Things like that can be huge for managing your budgets season after season.  Of course you have to stay in a world for 10+ seasons to see the advantage of that consideration, which is like 3 years in real time.

"97 patience, that means he's always going to be willing to resign, which means he'll never test the market"

Is this true? Does patience make a big difference in whether a player will re-sign?

the 3bman is 20 the SP is 22 the RP is 18, the RP is undecided the other 2 are definate.
The 3bs bat has this much to improve to hit proj: 28 10 24 24 12 and 20.  So he has a bit of improving to do, but i do have 18 colllege scouting so i am sure he will at least get really close.
The SP has: 28 19 24 12 15 17 10 and 21 to improve.  17 for the 1st pitch 24 for VSR.

The RP has 28 26 28 18 18 16 16 16.  And he is only 18.  28 to improve on both control and vsR is a bit scary, but its not that far off from the SP.

73 patience with the 3B and 93 for the RP.  Im definately looking away from the 3Bman, he will be a great 2nd to 5th overall pick no doubt though.  If the RP had no signability issues i think it would be a harder choice (or easier?)  the SP looks to be the man.  Whoever gets either the 3B or the RP is going to be very happy.  The top of class talent in this draft is very very strong indeed!

yah patience is the key as to whether they test free agency or not.  97 means he will always be loyal to me.  pretty awesome!

your right fasteddy, Ive definately made up my mind, the SP is all mine.  I couldnt see letting a stud lik that drop to 2nd or even 3rd if the 2nd pick didnt see him...
