Sorry Franchise, Looking for Good Owner Topic

The What if Baseball Hadn't Expanded League is looking for a new owner for the 1977 season for the Baltimore franchise.

Poor Old Baltimore has had 7 owners over the last 15 seasons.

Year Name owner W L
1962  Crusty Dilligafs  diiligadbp  90  64
1963  Lame Duck Dilligafs  diiligadbp  76  78

1965   Hingham Bay Bumpkins  cardsfan  72  82
1966   Hingham Bay Bumpkins  cardsfan  59  95
1967   Hingham Bay Bumpkins  cardsfan  58  96
1968   Hingham Bay Bumpkins  cardsfan  67  87

1974 Baltimore Terrpins zubinsum 68 86
1975 Baltimore Socialists Trentonjoe 78 76
1976 Baltimore Socialists Trentonjoe 78 76

Dilligaf quit over a disagreement in the draft.  I don't remember what happened to Cardsfan, cleon and combalt just dissapeared on us, hht was just taking the free team I offered, zubinsum got busy and the league has been runnign these poor saps for 2 years.   Do you want to adopt a franchise?

While the WIBHEL is reasonably traditional, we do have some quirks.

The WIBHEL is a long standing league based on the baseball rules of MLB before 1960.   We just have the National League and the American League. There is no interleague play in our 154 game schedule. The winners of the each league's pennent play for the World Series title.  No playoffs.

This leads to a little frustration, this year Traverse City led the AL from wire to wire but lost game 154 and was sent home for some early golf.  However, to lessen the sting,  the first round draft order is determine BEST to WORST for the first round.  The Beach Bums of the UP can least can lick console themselves knowing they get the #1 pick in the 1977 draft.

The teams tend to look more like all star teams, total salaries over 100 million are not uncommon.  Because RL MLB has 24 teams in 1977, our 16 team leagues generally only uses the best players (or at least the top 2/3rds).

The league is slow, I am not the world's greatest commissioner, and there is often weeks between the end  of the old season and start of the new one.  We are generally a group of laid back dudes that enjoy kabitzing on the forums and making fun of each other.

We are trying a new thing this year by rearranging the the teams so as to put the more successful teams (defined by WS appearances and total wins) in the NL and the teams that have struggled in the AL.  There have been some issues with rebuilding due to the draft order.

If this sounds like something you can get behind, let me know.

The quick and easy rule set is below:

  • 16 Teams
  • pre1961 schedule
  • no DH
  • 31 man roster
  • 4/2 AAA (used to create the extra 6 slots)
  • No interleague play
  • Draft order BEST to WORST (excluding WS teams) for the 1st round
  • Draft order Worst to Best in subsequent rounds
  • Bonus 1st round picks for new owners without a top 6 pick
  • 154 game schedule

I'll post the teams later on today when I have more time.

Team 2: Baltimore (but can move)

This team is pretty average.  It has some strengths and some guys with great futures but also has some wholes.   I would suspect that this team could compete in 1977 if you wished, or you could tear it down, sell the pieces and build around Murphy and others.  It drafts 7th and 18th (18 is the bonus pick) in the first round and then 8th in all subsequent  rounds.  It has 24 players on the current roster, you can draft up to 7 more players.
