I signed one of my own FA players this season for one yr at 3 mil.   I then picked up a much better player thru regular FA.   I demoted the 3 mil guy down to AAA and took him off my 40 man.   He is exposed for rule 5 draft.   If he gets picked up, who will be paying his 3 mil ?   Hopefully not me.   That alone is reason enough to put him back on the 40.  I might need him mid season for injuries or a reliable pinch hitter.     Any feedback appreciated.

The salary goes along with the player in R5.

it happens quite often that a player with that salary is rule 5 eligible, very rarely do they get picked

I've been known to pick up one of those guys if I have a lot of money left over after FA, and they're an upgrade over my 24th or 25th player on my roster.
