The 6th Derby City Classic will take place at Louisville, Kentucky.
Five schools join host Bellarmine to compete for the Black Diamond Trophy. It features a horseshoe carved from genuine Kentucky coal by Kentucky coal crafter Alvin Powell. Presenting the trophy to the winning team will be Johnny Depp. Born in Owensboro, KY, he was nominated for Best Actor for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’; ‘Finding Neverland’; and ‘Sweeney Todd’.
BELLARMINE
The host Knights are led by veteran coach greenhawks. Thru 35 years, he’s 907-229 at the Louisville, KY school. Included are eight Final Fours, one of which led to a national title and two others as RU.
The Knights return 10 players from last year’s 20-14 squad, which, as a #14 seed, advanced to the Elite Eight where they lost to Longwood 70-60.
Bellarmine’s chapel is named ‘Our Lady of the Woods’, even though there is no such lady in Catholic tradition. The statue in the chapel is actually Our Lady of Grace.
CALIFORNIA-SAN DIEGO
The Tritons hail from LaJolla, CA.
Through 7 seasons, coach hartigan99 is 144-71. The Tritons, 26-9, were national RU to Longwood last season and lost 3 players (1 starter) to graduation. They also won the Yam Jam tournament last year.
Until 2007, they were the only DII school not to award athletic scholarships. After the NCAA made scholarships mandatory for DII, the college gave $500 to each of it’s 600 athletes.
CHAMINADE
The Silverswords are coached by joewhatever. He’s been at the Honolulu school for 19 years, with a record of 359-205. They were 7-20 in his first season but have steadily improved ever since. They return 10 players from a 24-6 squad which was eliminated in the 2nd round of the PIT.
A Silversword is a rare Hawaiian plant found on the dormant Haleakula volcano.
MILES
Joehof coaches the Golden Bears from Birmingham, AL. He’s finished 3 seasons at Miles, with a record of 78-12. They return 10 players from a 26-4 team that lost to St. Mary’s in the first round.
Miles College president George French agreed to serve on the board of a charity whose goal was to provide free computers to underpriviledged kids. He resigned after he discovered that, prior to joining the board, $30,000 had been paid to gay porn star Jeremy Idol and $28,000 more had been withdrawn at casino ATMs.
U. OF THE SCIENCES
Coach mhollebeek coaches the Devils from Philadelphia. His 18-year record is 356-170 and includes the ’59 national championship. Their mascot is Drake the Devil. They were 21-7 last season, falling in the first round to Augusta St. They return 11 lettermen.
Alum Charles Elmer invented Hires Root Beer in 1876.. The temperance movement was upset by the word ‘beer’. He had his beverage tested and found that it contained less alcohol than a loaf of bread. It was promoted as ‘The Temperance Drink’ and claimed to purify the blood and make rosy cheeks.
WAYNE ST. (NE)
The Wildcats hail from Wayne, NE. Their veteran coach is jtreeves 27 who, in 31 seasons, is 726-300. They return 10 players from last season’s Sweet 16 squad.
Four players off of Wayne’s 1993 football team went on to play professionally. Brett Salisbury was the starting QB for the Helsinki East City Giants (Finland). Damon Thomas was a free agent who was picked up by the Bills. Brad Otis was the 2nd round pick of the Rams and played for Arizona Cardinals. Byron Chamberlain was the 7th round pick of the Broncos and made the Pro Bowl with the Vikings in 2001
