What if the player was traded to a team that wasn't picked?  Does his original team retain the rights or does he become part of the pool?

Doesn't even matter in that case since the Yankees and the Cubs were both unclaimed. However, Alberto Callaspo, who was traded from Anaheim to Oakland in 2013, is a free agent here.
