Puig's stats were already posted - my post was a question on Puig's defensive ratings ...I would have expected him to be much better than D+/D+ defensively - that guy had a cannon and I saw him get to as many balls in the gap as Trout
10/12/2013 10:23 PM
No kidding... ---Coulda' sworn he got 5 double plays
from the warning track, in his 1st 2 weeks on the job.

MTrout has glitches, but Wi$ out-glitches them all...

HRamirez looks killer as a perfect platoon w/ MWills
on all-time Dodger teams in other leagues here...

Realistically in all fairness, YPuig was a replacement
player, & did not debut as did MTrout, for example...

Yes, am a wee-bit stunned @ the double D+'s... Wi$
will always be controversial w/ many fielding grades...

Although there is hope... If tzent is truly reading this thread, 2 see if he
can help any legitimate responses 2 the new 2013 release, & maybe
offer a reply that ALL would agree to as benefiting our assessments...

To also be fair, in accord w/ other SiM sports here @ Wi$, ---then tzent
could consider what happened upon the NBA's recent release of their
new crop of basket-ballers...

Upon THAT release, the NBA community there was given a promise by
Customer Service that ANY DEFENSIVE ratings would be up-graded if
ANY players received placement on the NBA's ALL-DEFENSIVE teams,
both 1st team, & 2nd team... A short time thereafter, Wi$ did indeed do
that, living up 2 their promise... Even LeBron got an upgrade, that he'd
need when the ALL-DEFENSIVE teams were finally announced...

Point is, that tzent should see a fair request here regarding YPuig, that
he might consider as worthy of a slight up-grade...

It should be accommodated, equally... Once the Gold-Gloves are ALSO
announced, --then surely those winners should be brought back to ALL
of us here, with new fielding grade updates that reflect the Gold Gloves.

He should have NO qualms meeting the demands of this simple, very
important review... Surely tzent should be reading these observations...

Then, by that logic, any player who receives a post-season accolade should be adjusted, no?  The Cy Young winner gets a boost; same with MVP and Fireman, Silver Slugger, etc.

pinotfan... Saw your 1st post earlier, declaring this thread
as the 'best read' here... Things happened so fast on that
1st day of the new release...

Focusing on the defensive issues of the fielding grades...

Even if God Himself had powers of persuasion, He could
not use them successfully here, to convince tzent @ Wi$
that Silver Sluggers & Fireman, & Cy Youngs all need to be
brought back to the Wi$ assembly line for adjustments...

Respectfully, no considerations of their defensive abilities
had anything to do with those past historical post-season
selections...

Even if Rollie Fingers could be re-adjusted defensively, we
dwell in a baseball crazy community here that still clamors,
& begs of Wi$ to devise & develop a 'handlebar-moustache'
effect, thru an algorithm that works, ---w/ no complaints...

Levity aside, the Gold Gloves, & convincing arguments from
this Forum will work, as tzent seeks this from us here...

Find a player or 2, in the new 2013 release... Appeal to tzent,
as his 1st adjustments effected only fielding grades & those
salaries associated with the defensive up-grades, -which he
re-freshed in the database of the new release...

Stay tuned...

Do you understand this game at all?

The NBA defensive ratings are admittedly subjective.  WIS defensive grades are purely statistical.  There is no way to adjust them.  The actual grades don't even do anything, only the fielding percentage and RRF and respective normalization adjustments....

Defense in the NBA sim is clearly a weak point.  Defense in SLB works the same way as everything else in this game - it's purely statistical.  Of course there can be problems with that; all of it can have problems taken out of context.  Did everybody who played at Coors before the humidor experience a real, talent-based change in their power?  Of course not.  Could nobody on the Rockies pitch?  Maybe, but doubtful.  Yet you can go put those guys back into Coors or AFC and compound the park HR effects.  Does playing behind a flyball staff really make an infielder "lower range," or less effective at getting to ground balls?  Nope.  But in order to simplify the game to a single-player statistical simulation, it's probably the best way to do things.  For offense and pitching, you could adjust based on RL park ratings, but the reality is that to do that for every PA for every player is an extremely expensive computational/research undertaking.  And it's still going to leave opposing pitcher effects.  You almost can't fairly compensate for the fact that guys like David Ortiz, Chris Davis, Miguel Cabrera, and Paul Goldschmidt faced far more elite specialist short relievers than your average 8 or  9 hitter, especially the lefties.
10/13/2013 4:47 PM
Other than the adjustments for the all-defensive teams, the nba defensive ratings are statistically based.  The problem is that they didn't adjust the player-seasons prior to 1969 (the first year of all-defensive teams).
10/13/2013 9:18 PM
Based on what?  Admittedly, I don't know much about the basketball sim.  But there's no way to use the same sort of statistical analysis on basketball defense that's used in baseball defense.  What can you use?  OFG%?  That only truly works in a world with no switching, no screens, and no doubleteams.  The reality is that aside from steals and blocks, all of the defensive metrics used to evaluate basketball players are ambiguous at best, and even the nerdiest of basketball fans tend to discuss defense in very subjective terms.

Not even Google could figure that out
Yeah, but --->>> U may have graduated kindergarten, but
when it came time 2 read & write, U could NOT write at all
unless U could read...

So, your teacher wasted the effort, when that teacher taught
U the fundamentals of reading... & everytime U struggled 2
read, as a young 1st-grader, the teacher taught U to simply
PRONOUNCE what U R trying 2 read... Then, it works...

If U can't read it, then pronounce instead... Useless to read
Japanese, if U can't pronounce Japanese... When all is said
& done, & U still can't read it, or pronounce it, THEN, --MOST
LIKELY THAT IT WAS NEVER MEANT 4 U...

Whack nuts, who can't read, or pronounce, ain't my problem.

U R = you are and 2 = to isn't exactly advanced U-boat encryption.

Let's go ahead and break it down though, for those whack nuts who ain't your problem...

Hello, schwarze.  Nice cyber-shovel, man.  Your post, buried by all these other posted replies.  Apology for my oversight of your duo of questions.  Indeed someone did, and, an affirmative that changes occurred.  In my rush (things happened quickly, upon the release), and with other usernames, I opted to instead draft teams of catchers, with team number one having Joe Mauer 'C' slotted, at the top.  Those teams, two and a half total, produced a Top-26 catchers 'sample-size', salary-wise, descending.  The 'lightning-bolt' of the new additions to the database, had an immediate second bolt upon glance at Joe Mauer's D-.  Am I overstating the normal lightbulbs in brain cells, during 'idea mode'?  Blew a few bulbs with all that thunder, from the constant WTF's that were exploding by the second, with each glance at the multiplying D-'s.  Cut to the chase.  Perfect plan.  WIS Sitemail.  You old fart.  Of all the people to ask me?  Had to be you.  See you.

Even with the texting/internet shorthand removed, it makes no sense.  It's just a jumble of half-formed thoughts and fragments with random commas.  That's why people can't read it, not because 4 = for is beyond their kindergarten educations.
Thanks Skunk, for attempting to add some coherency to this newbie's post.   Now I understand that despite the forum post for all to read, it would have been better if the half formed, alcohol induced (?) musings were simply sent to schwarze as a personal site mail.   That would have spared all of us from the time wasted in trying to decipher the rambling thoughts.

i can't possibly be the only person who read through this thread and has absolutely no idea what in the hell jsakicno19 is talking about.

To bring this topic back onto course....

Any Pirate fans shocked to see Starling Marte get such bad defensive ratings?  The guy is a human highlight reel.
10/14/2013 3:27 PM
I never get a chance to see him, but his fielding percentage and range factors are both well well below league average...since those are (I believe) the only 2 factors WIS looks at in computing the FLD/RNG ratings, I'm not surprised.
10/14/2013 3:33 PM
Yeah, I know.  Clemente gets bad ratings defensively too.  Just shows us that we're not using the right stats defensively.

No issue with error rate... It is what it is.  But LF in PNC is huge, and Marte has the skills to be a CF anywhere in the league.
10/14/2013 3:38 PM
It's the same with Puig as it is with Marte.  The stats alone determine the ratings, and in both cases the stats have earned them their poor-looking fielding grades.  They made more errors and accounted for comparatively fewer outs than other OF while on the field.  That's it.  It may seem incongruous with what we thought we saw during the season (or at least the plays that stick out), but the SIM doesn't count Web Gems or Gold Gloves or anecdotal evidence.
