wow that is pretty damn impressive, where was that? surprised ive never seen that posted before, 5/6 has only happened one other time i think, that being rails 5/5 with one season on either side :)
That was with UTD in D3 Iba.  I remember because my team lost to them in the title game in seasons 50 and 55.  Iba might not be the deepest D3 world, but those were some real good UTD teams.

After seeing these other amazing runs, I would put jsa's on par with most of them, just because of consistency.  Anyone who gets to the elite 8 is usually a championship contender at least, which is not so for anyone who get knocked out before then.
But that run by rails is head and shoulders above the rest.  that's just insane.
Just so I'm sure I'm reading that right, are you saying that any team that gets/got knocked out before the Elite Eight is not/was not a championship contender?
Obviously there are teams that are contenders who get upset early,  I more meant it in the opposite way, that any team that makes the elite 8 has a chance to win the title,
i dont know, as the guy who held the longest elite 8 streak in HD for years, ive got to disagree. its really not that hard to luck into an elite 8 with a borderline top 25 team. you of course have a statistically significant chance to win at that point, with 3 games to go, but thats not really the point. ive never actually had one of the teams i considered really really good not win a championship, but ive had loads of garbage teams make the final four and championship game, and a handful of title favorites who never made the elite 8. i suspect many other long time coaches can say the same.
My last two D2 tournament teams are a pretty nice example of this. My Kentucky Wesleyan team in Allen last season was a legit title contender, going 15-1 in a conference that contained one of the title game participants (who finished 11-5), finishing in the top five, and earning a one-seed. We bombed out in the second round. My Alaska-Anchorage team in Knight had an absolutely elite frontcourt but had a marginal sophomore PG (he'll be solid eventually, but this season he was marginal), a slow (but great shooter) SG, and a SF with marginal defense and athleticism (in the 50s on both, for a D2 m2m team). We were not in the top 25, earned a nine-seed, and made the final four.

I haven't had a ton of favorites bombing out early or mediocre teams making the Elite Eight (my second lowest-seeded Elite Eight team was a four), but I've only been here a year and I've had both happen to me at least once.

youve only been here a year? done pretty well for yourself in your brief time here :)
10/30/2013 1:39 PM
Well, a year and a couple of months--I joined last summer. But thanks. I've build a lot of teams that I thought were contenders, but I've really struggled to make the Final Four. Yesterday was only my second one ever (despite 12 Elite Eight trips)
10/30/2013 1:41 PM
12 elite 8 trips in your first year and a couple months? damn. i guess you picked up more teams than me early on, but i had one of the fastest career paths and it took me about a year just to make the sweet 16. i had two 1 seeds who lost in the second round (one to rails at w chester pa on a down year) before i finally made the sweet 16, so that did hold me back, but still. 12 out of 50 or 60 seasons already in the elite 8, with a championship, thats one hell of a start, especially with those seasons so non-linear. will be interesting to see what you can do going forward!

10/30/2013 3:18 PM
Thanks. Almost half of those E8s have been with my first team (Maryville), where I just completed my 10th season (so I guess I've been here 450 days. One-a-day seasons are 45 days, right?). I have noticed as I get more teams, I pick up more tidbits about the game a lot faster, but I also have a harder time bearing down and optimizing the heck out of one team. Maryville just had our worst season in quite a while. But I certainly hope I can build on this and do big things going forward.

It actually took me 13 seasons (spread out over three worlds, so I guess that's more than six months) to win my first NT game. And when I broke through, bizarrely enough, it was as a 16-seed (Whitworth in Naismith) that got underseeded because I had too many conference mates in the tournament. Ended up losing in OT in the Sweet Sixteen that year.

Oldman_sons won titles at LSU(D1 Smith)in 59,60 and 63.Ffour 61,

Bump for the 3 peat.

Very proud of this one because Crum was very very strong this season. Had to beat 3 straight 600+ teams just to get to the final four. And got my revenge on tarvolon for the title game loss a few seasons back and for his jumping over me late in the season for the RPI crown.

Here's jsajsa's updated last 9 seasons in crum.  And he's returning his best players with most of his starters for one more season.

jsajsa has been incredible--I'm not sure how he does it. It's like the rest of us in Crum are playing for second.
Says the guy who made me finish second 2 seasons ago...

And thanks for the recognition, Dan! I'm very proud of the elite eight streak, and the 9 out of 10 top 2 RPI seasons. Frankly, championships are more about just plain luck.
Told ya the rest of us were playing for second.

Have these types of runs happened in D1? I know OR had a pretty great run early in the Tark days with UCONN. But now it seems there are too many really good coaches at D1 for 1 coach to dominate in that way.
Oldman just won his 4th in 5 seasons at Michigan State in Crum. Back to backs surrounding a Final Four trip. Overall 164-10, 28-1 in the NT.

WOW nice job oldman, that is one hell of a run. very, very, very impressive.

I was thiiiiissssss close to 4 straight titles this season... :( Took down the elite 8 DIII record so all that's in front of me is billy/gillispie's DII streak I believe.

Here's jsa's updated 10 year run. Probably won't post this anymore, since 9 and 10 seasons ago he won the title,so can't improve on that.
6 of 10 titles.  Worst finish=Elite 8.
