Yarnell Invitational 69 Topic

We had a really good tournament last season. Check it out here.

This will be the
28th season of The Yarnell Invitational (named after Yarnell Ice Cream in Searcy, AR). As always, it'll be a 6 team round-robin tournament that'll occur in weeks 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the non-conference schedule. Harding University will be the tournament host. The defending champ from the previous year is an automatic qualifier. The remainder of the field is invitation only partly based on alblack's dynasty rankings. Link to latest and greatest is at:

alblack's Dynasty Rankings

IF YOU ARE AT OR CLOSE TO THE TOP OF THE DYNASTY RANKINGS AND INTERESTED IN PLAYING IN THIS TOURNAMENT, KEEP NON-CONF GAME #'s 5 THROUGH 9 OPEN UNTIL NOTICE THIS TOURNAMENT IS FULL.

Formal Invitations will be sent out sometime after job application period is over, but you can reply now if you plan to play in this tournament.

FORMAT: 5 games, Round Robin
Game #5: DC @ Host, #2 @ #1, #4 @ #3
Game #6: Host @ #4, #1 @ DC, #2 @ #3
Game #7: #3 @ Host, #1 @ #4, DC @ #2

Game #9: #1 @ Host, #2 @ #4, #3 @ DC

Host: Harding [GulfSouth]

Formal Invitations have been extended to the following four schools:

Should any invitation be declined, I'll likely look for the replacement from that conference or next in rankings.

St Mary's looking for a threepeat with Yarnell 68 MVP Mark Murphy back to defend the title.

All the home teams are underdogs in round 1. Confucius say at least one of those underdogs will not only cover but win straight out.

Nothing but one-and-done's for my Harding team vs St Marys. 7 offensive boards for the game. Only 2 in the 2nd half. Outrebounded 33-21 for the game. In a game of athleticism vs speed. Athleticism won. Preseason all-american Mark Murphy overcame foul trouble to earn player of the game with 16 points and 6 of those boards. Tyrone Dorr was big off the bench with 4-10 3-point shooting for 12 points and led a key run in the 2nd half to push a 2-point lead to double-digits. Derrick Cook scored a season high 17 for Harding.

Hillsdale College owned the end of the first half and beginning of second half to take control of a competitive game at home. Hillsdale led 29-28 with 5 min left in first half and closed it on a 10-4 run to lead 39-32 at the half. This was pushed to 11 points in the first 3 minutes of the 2nd half. Lander rallied to cut it back to 2 with 10 minutes left. But that's when the inside/outside combination of Ransom/Latimer took over for Hillsdale. Joseph Latimer earned player of the game with 14 points. This has to be Latimer's 17th season at Hillsdale.

The Limestone students were about the only fans left and were left crushed after watching their team rally from down 18 to lead by 1 only to lose in the end. The UCSD backcourt led by player of the game Joseph Jordan pushed a 12 point halftime lead to 18 at 50-32 with 11 minutes left in the game and the crowd got up and left. But that's when noted alum Gaylord Perry got up out of his posh box seat and went down to the Limestone student section and urged them to move behind the UCSD goal. It worked. With 1:20 left in the game, Limestone PG Dan Wilson made a 3-pointer to complete a 26-7 run to put them up 58-57. After a UCSD basket and Limestone FT, UCSD held the ball for the final shot and Jordan was the hero as he took Wilson off the dribble and scored with 6 seconds left and was fouled. He made the FT to make the final margin. E Graham missed a game-tying 3 out of the left corner at the buzzer.

Harding led 24-7 at 10 min mark, 30-21 at half, 42-32 with 12 min left in game, tied at 44 with 7 min left, and lost 54-64. Unreal.

Think about that. I won the 1st 32 minutes 42-32. And lost the last 8 minutes 32-12.

Good luck to SMU and Hillsdale College tonight

Nice job St. Marys.

I was totally out coached vs. Harding - nice job by hackerhog, going with the 3-2 which I was completely unprepared for -- leading to the strange 38 point line by Shepherd - since I didn't set my distro for 3-2 zone (not making excuses, total fail on my part not to prepare for that option)
