NOTE: This is more for personal record keeping purposes only.  I noticed plenty of other coaches doing the same thing throughout the message boards, so figured I'd give it a go and see how things develop over time.

After last year's surprising success, I  knew I needed to replace four players (3 to graduation +cut a useless SIM recruit PF), two of which were my top scorers. Despite this huge loss I don't expect any dropoff in the offensive front. I'm confident my returning big men (List & Baker) and stud freshmen (Crowder & Bean) will have no issues picking up the slack and collectively contributing offensively.  I also return USA South Athletic Conf. Defensive player of the year Albert Brown, who I will rely on again to shut down the opposing team's top guard.

RECRUITING
[Quick recap on last year] When I took over the team last offseason, I had the fortune of having a talented upperclassmen heavy roster and over $14000 to fill three scholarships (which ended up being four after cutting a SIM recruited bum).  Unlike previous seasons (in other worlds), I did an amazing job of being patient, straying away from recruiting battles and keeping close to home.  Because of this I was able to land 3 D2 Drop downs (Crowder, Bean and Williams) that will undoubtedly lead the team to new heights.  After locking up three in-state players (Crowder, Williams and Pool) I realized I had over $4000 to play with.. so I decided to pull the trigger and cut a bum PF and try to land one more stud; Canadian unknown Don Bean.  After sending one scouting trip, I knew I found a diamond in the rough (67A with High/High in Speed, Def, Reb, LP) so I followed it up with 2 more scouting trips and a phone call to his coach to make sure.  One home visit and I had him locked up.

[This year's Class] Unfortunately the conference didn't fair as well in the post season last year as they did the previous year, so I only had a little over $10,500 to fill my four open slots.

The Good: I did a good job of keeping recruiting close to home (only purchased scouting reports for VA & DC).  This class is all about potential- Unlike last year, I don't expect any of these guys to start/contribute too much this year.  PF Allan Nye is the only one my assistant coach evaluated as "a future DIII All-American", however I'm fairly confident SG Childress will be a force if he develops to his potential.

The Bad: 1. Was way too agressive/impatient, spending my entire budget before the second signing period.
               2. This led me to missing out on late D2 drop down players
               3. I wasn't able to land a defensive specialist guard to replace Brown after he leaves this year

Name Pos State Overall $ Spent
Steve Childress SG VA 422 $4741
Harry Schultz SF VA 409 $1232
Allan Nye PF VA 423 $744
Mike Snowden SG VA 385 $428

Details:
Steve Childress  SG  Appomattox, VA
Sim controlled St. Lawrence REALLLY wanted this guy.. I spent almost half my budget on him and still BARELY got him (9 HV, 1 CV, 5 S-trips). Though he's only rated 422- He's High/High in Ath,Speed, Def, Per, BH & Pass with a 57 WE.  This guy will be a STUD!

Harry Schultz  SF Richlands, VA
After getting snubbed by two D2 prospects, found this guy who was already considering Bethany.  After one scouting trip I knew I had to land him. He's pure potential.  Blue High/High across the board (besides Red in LP, and Avg. in Reb & Def).  Depending on how well he develops this season is whether I cuz last year's only recruiting blunder, SF Brian Pool (who I accidentally overlooked his 13 WE which resulted in him only improving 25pts last year..)

Allan Nye  PF  Richmond, VA
With Don Bean rebounding potential not as good as originally thought, he's developing more into an SF without range (but killer Def/LP).  So I figured it would be smart to land a more traditional/defensive minded PF. Nye's poor speed/Ath (both in the red) may end up with him being a bust or failing to contribute to his full potential- but based upon his scouting reports and "Future All- American" tag, I'm willing to give him a shot.  Hoping his High/High in Def, Reb and LP will out weight his lack of speed.

Mike Snowden  SG  Suffolk, VA
After pulling out of a loosing battle for a JUCO defensive specialist guard (-$2756) I realized I was running out of money quick- and panicked.  (Note: I was still battling for Childress at this time).  Snowden was a quick and easy sign, with solid potential that I strongly believe will never be more than a depth player.  I didn't even scout him- just called him, sent him a letter and then an offer. Sealed it with a HV.  He's got high potential in Def, Per & BH and Avg potential Speed, Ath, & Pass.  I plan on Red-Shirting him this season and hopefully he'll be useful in a couple seasons?

Season Synopsis:  The squad had a disappointing start to the season going 3-7 in Non-Conf and a 0-2 start to Conf play, something had to change.  After doing some analyzing, I decided to switch the lineup around.  I initially started the year with List/Baker on the inside with Bean at the SF- I decided to get more speed into my starting line up and run an up tempo Flex Offense.  I moved Bean to his natural position at PF, start Brian Pool at SF and have Baker come off the bench.  From that point on I went 13-2, loosing only to #23 Piedmont before getting upset by Shenandoah in the 2nd round of the CT.

Hightlights:
- Soph. duo Bean/Crowder lead the team to second consecutive regular season Conference Championship, averaging 14.5 ppg/13.0 ppg respectively
- Albert Brown named Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season

Synopsis

This season was a huge disappointment, all around.  Juniors Crowder and Bean lead the charge as expected; however no one else on the team stepped up to replace the void left by last year’s seniors.  Though I knew it would be tough to replace TWO top big men that cumulatively averaged 20PPG and 13RPG last season, I underestimated the impact of losing our starting PG (who was two time conference defensive player of the year).  Outside my three juniors, this year’s squad lacked depth, experience, consistency and the ability to pass.  This inconsistency resulted in multiple loses to inferior opponents, including two really weak SIM controlled conference foes (Greensboro & Ferrum), while knocking off highly rated NCW (Final RPI 76) twice and coming within one point of Averett (Final RPI 58).

Player Analysis

If I can get Crowder & Bean (both already top ten all time scorers in school history) some help (via a solid Transfer or JUCO) I should be able to make the PI, if not the NT this season.  Even though I am only graduating one senior (role player that started one game his whole career), luckily our conference was able to get four teams into the NT this past season so I should have about $4k to work with this offseason.

Additionally, I’ve decided to cut ties with Sophomore PF Allen Nye.  As I feared when I initially signed him a couple seasons ago, his lack of speed has become his downfall.  His lack of speed as made him a defensive liability and his development in other key areas haven’t been sufficient enough to make up for this short coming.  If I had more than $4k to work with this offseason I would also cut RS Freshmen SG Mike Snowden.  After two seasons he’s still only rated 469, having already maxed out on Passing (32) and Speed (50).  Though to his credit, his Def rating of 52 and Per of 84 allow him to still be useful to a minor extent.

Nye’s High School teammate, Redshirt Sophomore Center Mike Williams consistently underperformed in his first season as a starter.  He failed to control the glass (despite his 94 Reb rating) and was consistently outrebounded/outplayed by inferior opponents on a nightly basis.  I will need Williams to step up this year if this team is going to take the next step and make it back into the postseason.

Sophomore Steve Childress struggled early this year as the starting PG and was eventually moved to the bench, where he thrived as the team’s ‘6th man and ended up being the team’s most improved player.  Going into this season, I plan to give Childress another shot at the starting PG role (if I’m unable to bring in a talented JUCO/Transfer PG) and I’m confident he’ll fare much better this time around.

I was content with how two of my Freshmen developed this year. PG Charles Greer and PF Tony Veith both progressed nicely in all key categories (as expected) and should continue to grow substantially over the next few seasons.  Though neither are ready for big time minutes yet, they will both serve as solid depth guys this coming season and should be ready for starting minutes the following season (After the departure of Bean/Crowder).  The third freshmen, C Mark Traynor only improved 38 (though 18 in LP) and like Allen Nye, lacks Speed/Athleticism to be effective. However unlike Nye, he has decent defensive rating and is still blue in LP and SB. Depending on the recruits I land this offseason, I will probably end up Redshirting him this season and re-evaluating him next off season.

RECRUITING GOALS/WISHLIST:
- Find Low Post/Rebounding Depth
- Try to land a JUCO/Transfer PG or SF with strong def/pass that can step right into the starting line-up
                                                 OR
- Recruit a defensive specialist guard

- Blew $3165 pursuing two different JUCO guards (one in MD went D2, NY pg picked up by local D3 A+ program)
- Spent $1072 unsuccessfully pursuing (coach calls/few ST) D2 drop downs

Now with an A- Prestige rating and I still can't land a top notch JUCO player (picked off by D2 squads and established A+ D3 squad).. nonetheless, I like the class I have coming in.  Cut last year's recruit, SF Ronald Culver after realizing he will never be the shut down player I had initially hoped (considering he maxed out  in ATH at 25, and all his DEF/BLK/REB (all initially blue) quickly turned black a few games into the season.

NAME HOMETOWN POSTION HIGH/HIGH HIGH OVERALL $ SPENT

Jody Rogers Candler, NC C LP Reb, Def, SB, Per, Stamina, FT 428  $          1,917

NOTE: Only sent 2-3 ST per recruit, so each may be H/H in more than the one category listed- however since my stupid assistant coach's ST reports look pretty much identical every time.. I don't know.  Each recruit has plenty of potential, each having something that stood out about them that made them appealing. (To be con't)

Between the Conference sending 5 teams to the NT and loosing a 5 man senior class, my recruiting budget this year was $18548 to fill 5 scholarships.  Considering I will only loose one player to graduation next year, I planned on taking 1 or 2 walk-ons this year in order to even out my classes a little bit.

  • Dropped $5068 on FSS when all was said and done (not all at once..)

  • After already locking up the three recruits I ended up with, I had over $4000 to play with.. considering I was planning on bringing in at least walkon this coming season, I knew I was going to loose all of it.. so I decided to scout all over the place for a diamond in the rough... before settling on going for a JUCO SF (with amazing BH/P that would of been perfect as my 6th man this coming year, while allowing me to RS my PG recruit.. unfortunately I farted away too much $$ scouting random states/players that $4058 wasn't enough to sign him (320 mi away, 4 HV/1 CV/5 ST +guaranteed 15mins & Starter).. so I simply ended up with these three studs:

Name Hometown Pos. Overall $            Notes
Edmund Williams Dunmore, WV SG 471  $  3,568 D2 recruit that took 12 STs to pull down, already knows flex/press, HH Per & Speed, High in BH,Def,Stamina, FT
Dean Welty Little River, SC PG 420  $  1,775 Already the fastest  player/best passer on the team- HH BH,PER, High Def & Per
Gilbert Mcdonald (JUCO) Wye Mills, MD C    $  1,300 High Ath/Reb/Def/LP/Per
