A little bit on the "5 Keepers" option.  What I want to do is make sure that a team with a strong Def/OL/ST doesn't get to keep strong offensive skill positions.  I ran a spreadsheet on all 28 teams (Def/OL/ST only) and came up with a minimum and maximum keeper salary that each team could potentially have.  The Eagles were the highest salary with a min = $38.9 and a max = $40.4.

If we assume they choose the lowest salary combination for their Def/OL/ST, then the following scenarios exist:
  • 5 keepers at the min salary = 1.6 + 38.9 = $40.5 million
  • 5 keepers at avg salary of 500k each = 2.5 + 38.9 = $41.4 million
  • 5 keepers at avg salary $1mil each = $5 + $38.9 = $43.9 million
  • 5 keepers at avg salary of $1.5mil each = $7.5 + $38.9 = $46.4 million

If we go this route, my gut feeling is to raise the max salary to $42 million.  This would allow the Eagles spend $3.1 million on 5 players.  What do you guys think?

A little other data that came out from that research regarding salaries for Def/OL/ST:
  • Avg Min Salary = $27.5 mil
  • Avg Max Salary = $33.3 mil
  • Avg Salary overall = $30.4 mil
  • 4 teams have max salary below $30 mil
  • 9 teams have min salary above $30 mil

I think having the FA draft in reverse order of salary, and using that same order (instead of snake-order) for each round of the draft, will make people work towards using less $.   So I'm in favor of setting the cap as high as reasonable.  However, you do want to balance that so people have to make some decisions and can't keep everyone.

Roster Rules

I. Pre-Draft - After the league is full, each owner will declare which Defense, O-Line and Special Teams unit they will use. Total salary for these combined units will be calculated. After this process, each owner will be allowed to protect up to 3 players from his team's real life roster from 1980 and 1981. The combined salary of the Def, OL, ST and 3 protected players can't exceed $40MM. The more funds you allocate to your defense, o-line and special teams, the less you will have to spend on protected players.  Note: If a given player played for more than one team in 1980-81, then the team with the lowest salary (Def, OL, and ST) gets first rights to said player. If they choose not to protect him, then the team with 2nd lowest salary (Def, OL, and ST) gets the rights to him.

Whichever team has the lowest salary (Def/OL/ST) gets first rights to him.......
