D3, Season 70 Topic

Dickinson's 138 might be the single highest score I've seen one team accomplish in regulation in my many seasons. I certainly can't recall anything else in the 130-range previously in a non-overtime affair.

Sure beats the 44-43 game that the UC Bearcats and Pitt played in real time!

I remembered a JDub game I thought was close to that score, so I looked it up in the Season-68 thread.  We beat Albertus Magnus 142-80, and did NOT cover the spread lol.

Well, that makes the 93 you hung on me feel a little better...

Let's just pretend I have a clever comment or interesting factoid to type.

Last Night
Howard Payne 64   #4 Hardin-Simmons 111
Considering Hardin-Simmons was only up by 6 points at the half, I'm going to go ahead and suggest that the Howard Payne players try to forget about the second half of this one and just move on.  The home team scored enough points in the second half alone to win the game by 3.  Wow.  Hardin-Simmons and sublightd moved up a spot in the rankings and stayed undefeated while Howard Payne and aggigegoeg are busy burning all recordings of the second half.

Also considered: #5 Johnson and Wales got a timely shot block of an attempted buzzer-beater to just edge Emmanuel 68-66, #7 Lynchburg got the road win over Virginia Wesleyan 87-75, #13 Whittier handled CSU Eastbay 78-51, #14 Emory got past Hendrix 68-43, and #17 W. New England held off Emmerson 74-60.

Sim blowout watch: All three of our sims covered: Oberlin fell to #16 Wittenberg 49-79, Hampden-Sydney lost 64-80 to #15 Emory and Henry, and Marietta were crushed by #8 John Carroll 107-61.

ITaLRbHAGotN: St. Lawrence had a fairly easy time with Rochester, outscoring them by five in each half on the way to a 78-68 road win.  St. Lawrence and joewhatever stayed perfect in conference play while Rochester saw their divisional lead trimmed to just one game.

GotN
#14 Emory (14-4)(phalla) at #25 Sewanee (13-4)(madpad78)
Another game of ranked opponents in the University as divisional foes play their rematch.  Both teams are chasing undefeated and top-ranked Millsaps in the divisional standings so the winner of this game could put themselves in line for the second conference tourney bye.  phalla leads the series 14-5 but the odds-makers have this one as even pick.

Also considered: Earlham at #3 Wooster, #5 Johnson and Wales and Daniel Webster, Colorado at #13 Whittier, and Suffolk at #17 W. New England

Sim blowout watch: Winless Bridgewater is getting a hefty 79 points as they host #15 Emory and Henry while repeat-performer Hampden-Sydney is a 61 point home dog against #7 Lynchburg.

ITaLRbHAGotN
Aurora (10-7)(jbra12) at #9 Webster (16-2)(mschulte24)
Gorloks.

Actor Gordon Jump graduated from Otterbein University in 1955 and went on to a long career highlighted by his role of Arthur Carlson on WKRP in Cincinnati.  "As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."

Last Night
#13 Emory 60   Sewanee 52
This was a very close game with the two teams trading the lead back and forth most of the way.  Emory finally took the decisive lead with just over eight minutes left in the game and they held on from there for the win.  The home team has to be disappointed with their shooting, a small improvement on the 25% from 3pt and 31% overall could have probably changed the outcome.  Emory and phalla hold on to second place in the division with Sewanee and madpad now two games back.

Also considered: #3 Wooster cruised past Earlham 73-45, #4 Johnson and Wales handled Daniel Webster 107-76, #12 Whittier got the home win over Colorado 69-57, and Suffolk upset W. New England 71-66.

Sim blowout watch: Bridgewater stayed winless but still covered against #18 Emory and Henry 45-108 and Hampden-Sydney covered again vs #9 Lynchburg 49-86.

ITaLRbHAGotN: #8 Webster 71 and Aurora 44.  Too.  Much.  Gorlok.

GotN
#19 Susquehanna (17-2)(zeuspole) at #6 Penn St. Altoona (17-1)(frankgrimes1)
I'm pretty sure I could go back and copy paste any of the writeups I did for this game the past few seasons.  It seems like every year these two are ranked and their first divisional battle of the season finds them both undefeated in conference play.  Same as ever, Susquehanna is 9-0 and PSA is 8-0 and their first of two games will give one of them the early divisional lead.  frank holds a 41-24 all-time lead and his team is favored by a single point at home.

Also considered: #25 Christopher Newport at #17 Greensboro, #7 John Carroll at Capital, and #22 Rivier at Daniel Webster

Sim blowout watch: Keuka is a 64 point road dog as they travel to #10 Vassar and Upper Iowa is getting 57 points on the road against #16 Simpson.

ITaLRbHAGotN
Gallaudet (16-2)(Sim AI) at Mary Washington (14-4)(reisel)
A key game in the Capital conference as M-Dub trails Gallaudet by a game in the standings after an upset loss earlier in the conference slate.  The home team needs this one to get back on top of the division and to build up the post-season resume.  Gallaudet is favored by 1 on the road.

Well, I think the GotN writeups are going to take a short break for the next couple days while I'm hanging out with family and eating way too much food.

I hope everyone has a great holiday, I'll pick the writeup back up again later this week.

12/22/2013 11:52 AM
Well said. Happy holiday to everyone at WIS.
12/22/2013 2:28 PM
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you as well phalla...and to all my Rupp and WIS kindred spirits for that matter.

Peace to all!

12/22/2013 6:49 PM
Gordon's season over, simmy is on the verge of being fired. Guess I have to take over again.
12/30/2013 1:50 PM
Alright, I'm back from my little writing holiday and we're a day into the conference tourneys.  It was nice to take a little break and as an added bonus, it prevented me from saying anything to jinx Wooster's perfect conference season.  Go Fightin' Scots!

Good luck to everyone in the conference tournament games, let's take a quick look at the regular season conference winners.

Regular Season Conference Champions

ASC -- #5 Hardin-Simmons (sublightd) went 16-0 for the second time in three seasons to claim their fifth straight conference title.  And yes, I copied/pasted that from last season's writeup and replaced Texas Lutheran with Hardin-Simmons.
Capital -- Gallaudet (Sim) duplicated another sim's performance from last season to finish perfect in conference.
Centennial -- #11 Dickinson (mfnmyers) finished 16-0 for the second straight season taking their streak of conference titles to twenty seasons.
CUNY -- Brooklyn (Sim) fended off the other sims to go 14-2 and capture the fifth conference win in school history.
CCIW -- Northland (raucous) was perfect just like last season, this is their fifth straight banner.
Coast -- No ties in the standings this year, Wentwoth Tech (chewchad) rolled through for a 16-0 record.  It took a while to count but this makes forty-three straight titles.
Commonwealth -- #7 Penn St. Altoona (frankgrimes1) and #19 Susquehanna (zeuspole) both finished 15-1 after splitting their season series.  PSA gets the top seed thanks to a one game edge in overall record.
Empire -- #12 Vassar (theriddler) was a perfect 16-0 for the third straight season.  If they ever lose a conference game again it's going to hurt.
Freedom -- Carnegie Mellon (pork_melon) won a conference title in pork's first season at the helm, finishing 15-1.
GNE -- #4 Johnson and Wales (spasticity) finished an impressive 16-0 in an as-usual competitive conference.  This is J-Dub's sixth straight first place finish.
Heartland -- Mt. St. Joseph (cokeman) won a second straight banner with a 15-1 record.
Iowa -- Buena Vista (darthhoosier) and Simpson (profgreen) both finished at 15-1 but Buena Vista gets the nod thanks to their head-to-head win.
Lil East -- #13 UMass Dartmouth (pureh21) went 16-0 for the second time in three seasons, winning their fifth straight conference title.
Michigan -- Eureka (usjgt) finished 15-1 and won the title by one game.
Midwest -- Beloit (Sim) also went 15-1 but won their conference by two games in the standings.
Minnesota -- Macalester (Sim) kept the theme going, finished 15-1 and one game ahead of their nearest pursuer.
NESCAC -- Ok, things got interesting here.  Bowdoin (Sim), Colby (Sim), Tufts (gabby1234), and Williams (Sim) all finished at 11-5.  The two pairs of division winners both split their season series but Bowdoin and Tufts got the top seeds on overall record.  Bowdoin won the cross-divisional game with Tufts so they get the top spot.
New Jersey -- Ramapo (pgj930) gets us back on track, going 15-1 for their fourth straight banner.
N. Atlantic -- Maine Maritime Academy (Sim) and Castleton State (Sim) both finished 14-2 but MMA won the head-to-head game and is declared king of the sims.
N. Coast -- #2 Wooster (pseudochamp) finally gets a perfect 16-0 season and dancing kilts fill the streets.
Northwest -- #3 Willamette (bullman17) went undefeated for a second straight season, finishing a full five games ahead of the competition.
Ohio -- #6 John Carroll (whit6r) keeps up the single-digit ranked theme, also going 16-0 for the title.
ODAC -- #8 Lynchburg (googs04) also went 16-0.  I'm running out of things to say about this situation.
Penn -- Marywood (Sim) finished 14-2 to win the battle of sims.
Skyline -- #14 Merchant Maines (lynchmob1414) finished with a 15-1 record, good enough for their fifteenth straight banner.
So. Cal. -- #10 Whittier (windixies) finally knocked off Colorado by going a perfect 16-0 in conference play.
St. Louis -- #9 Webster (mschulte24) was once again a GORLOK 16-0 for their eight straight GORLOK.
SUNY -- SUNY Cortland (cuck) went 14-2 to capture their seventh straight title.
University -- #1 Millsaps (brianxavier) finished as the top ranked team again but actually managed to win their conference this time at 16-0.
Upstate -- St. Lawrence (joewhatever) and Rochester (Sim) both finished 14-2 but St. Lawrence gets the nod after winning the head-to-head matchup.
USA South -- #20 Greensboro (tilldog28) went 15-1 for their thirteenth straight first place finish.
Wisconsin -- Wisconsin La Crosse (theaaskimo) also went 15-1 for a third straight title.

Nine games with teams outside the top 64 in the projection report pushes the cutoff to 55.  That new cutoff brings in another game with two teams outside so the cutoff becomes 54.  Seven games involve only one team outside the top 54, so that means the cutoff will be between 47 and 54.  After tonight, 1-47 on the projection report will automatically be in and teams lower than 54 will be in the PIT at best.  The teams between will be rooting hard for the higher projected teams.

Good luck to everyone still playing.

First time as a #1 seed.  So nervous, doesn't matter who we play I'm going to be a wreck.

I feel you. I always seem to choke in the first or second round when I'm a 3 seed or higher. Hoping this time around my seed is warranted.
