they played that the other day on intentional talk

So it seems to make sense to not change the rule and have the umpires use their common sense.

What was that you were saying about protecting pitchers, mike???

My post from another thread that I opened first:

"This is kind of funny.  MLB outlawed the body armor that Bonds was wearing to protect himself from inside pitches.   Now they outlaw collisions at the plate and want pitchers to don protective headgear.

What happens more in MLB?    HBP, collisions at the plate or liners off the pitcher's noggin?"

They outlawed it because it was excessive and was mostly just there to draw HBP, no?

HBP happen more often. But they outlawed the heavy armor because it led to more HBP.

If you'd ever been hit on the elbow with a 90+ MPH fastball, I doubt you'd think anything that dulled the impact was excessive.

Yea, it hurts, but I think the idea is "enough to protect you" not "enough to make sure it doesn't hurt at all."  Theory is that players were using armor not so much for protection, but more to get on base more often.

Do you think catchers have "enough to protect you" options at home plate?   You know, like not blocking the plate.
12/20/2013 11:16 AM
If you give a pro athlete an option to gain an advantage, legally, they're going to take it.
12/20/2013 11:28 AM
Does one gain an advantage by breaking a leg?
12/20/2013 11:34 AM
No. Not sure why one would think breaking your leg gives an advantage.
12/20/2013 11:54 AM
Then, if you're concerned about breaking a leg, which will NOT give you a competitive advantage, don't block the plate.   It's just a risk/reward decision a catcher has to make.

Catcher will block the plate to gain a competitive advantage. Every time.
12/20/2013 12:11 PM
Then he shouldn't ***** when the runner busts his *** and, possibly, breaks his leg.
