Why am I behind this team in the projections? Topic

School Conf RPI SOS Record Home Away Last 10
91. Arizona St. PAC 10 114 176 6-4 2-1 4-3 6-4
92. Santa Clara WCC 70 120 6-4 2-1 4-3 6-4

First off I want to say this really doesn't matter as we're only 10 games into the Knight season AND we're talking about projection #91, but I'm curious why am I behind ASU when we have the same record, same home record and same road record, but I have a high RPI and SOS. I'm just curious what the reasoning is.

Any guesses? I thought maybe conference RPI, but isn't that factored into your team's RPI?

In the FAQ this is how the projection report is determined.
  • Record against teams ranked 1-50 by RPI
  • Record against teams ranked 51-100 by RPI
  • Record against teams ranked 101-200 by RPI
  • Record against teams ranked below 200 by RPI
I would look at both of your schedules and see how these compare.

You have to go game-by-game instead of cumulative. The difference between 91 and 92 is negligible, but looking at your game-by-game performance, your best win is vs the 129 RPI team, which is hurting your standing.

RPI Santa Clara ASU
1-50 0-1 0-1
51-100 0-2 0-2
101-200 5-1 3-1
200+ 1-0 3-0

So wouldn't this help my case too?

Again, still a long way to go, but just interesting.

To tell you the truth, I find the projection reports confusing myself.  You would think RPI vs. Top 50 would be in the projection report if it were so important. Often times, I have found my team behind another team, despite beating them in just about every listed category.
