Not sure why I'd accept a 4yd penalty as opposed to 17 yards on the play? Anyone have an answer?

10:19 Own 33 1st & 20   OFF: Shotgun    DEF: Dime

Defense lines up for a run. Edward Potter lines up in shotgun and takes the snap. Stevens (Arrington,Arnold,Jenkins) is covered at the SJSU 43 (Medium). The defense is starting to get pressure on Potter. Potter throws to Ferguson (Sharp) at the SJSU 37 (Short). Ferguson makes the catch. Jenkins gets a hand on Ferguson to bring him down at the 50. 17 yard gain. PENALTY on UM, Defensive Pass Interference, 4 yards, enforced at SJSU 37.

It was 1st & 20. The engine always accepts penalties if it's the difference between a 1st down or not.

Well that sucks...2 and 3 compared to 1st and 10 with a worse spot in field position that's faulty logic.
