If you try to make him close he is.

I think he's lost a lot of confidence the last year or so. And if his two-seamer isn't moving, he's toast.

It killed me to see Oakland spend 1/9 of their payroll on this guy in the off season.

It's interesting how Beane used to be the "get a guy who throws really hard, he can pitch in the bullpen" guy, and lately he's been spending money on relievers.

too bad he didn't spend the money on Grant Balfour instead of Johnson.

He'll be a stud if they move him into a setup role.  He can even throw 2-3 innings pretty easily.  Totally miscast as a closer.

It took 3 or 4 shots at closing until he finally stuck in the role in the first place.  He really struggled with the psychology of closing, and then for a little over a year he was lights out.  Then blew a playoff series almost singlehandedly and led baseball in blown saves last year.  Check out his ERA in 1-run games last season.  I calculated it in August and he had an ERA in the 1s in games with a 2+ run lead, but 6s or 7s with a 1-run lead.  Just couldn't handle the pressure again.

Honestly, I think Oakland should stretch him out and try him as a starter. He has three solid pitches, including that sinker for ground balls - I think he could still be a solid, 3.50 ERA starter with a low HR total.

I thought they WOULD try to do that, but I don't know how it would go.  He wasn't even successful starting in the minors.
