TROY TULOWITZKI for JOSE REYES!!!! Topic

Ok, so it wasn't a one for one trade. The Rockies traded Tulo and Closer, LaTroy Hawkins to the Blue Jays for Jose Reyes and prospects. But this is definitely a big deal. This has huge bust potential! Both Reyes and Tulo are having great years. Tulo's OPS at home and on the road are nearly identical. Last year, he was a product of Coors, this year he is proving his critics wrong by hitting on the road. Also, the Rogers Centre is a hitters park so expect him to continue the same numbers. Wow! Tulo, Donaldson, Bautista, Encarnicion, Devon Travis, Russel Martin, and Chris Colabello (800+ OPS)

Good pickup for the Jays. Weird move for the Rockies.

Two possibilities:

1)  Toronto plans to try to win by out-slugging their opponents.  They've already scored 72 more runs than anybody else in MLB,  Tulo makes them marginally better in that regard.  But it's pitching that wins games in October.

2)  The Jays turn around a deal Tulo to somebody else for the pitching they need.  Could be a risky move since the deal to Toronto triggers a full no trade clause for Tulo.  Unless they already have a preliminary deal in place that Tulo has already agreed to.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about.  BL has already deemed it a "good pickup for the Jays".  And nobody knows baseball here better than him.

Rockies also shed 50 million in dollars. I'll bet they flip Reyes as well.

Really?  How do you figure?  The Jays don't need more offense.  I honestly couldn't figure out why they'd give up so much for a small upgrade at SS carrying a massive injury risk.
No such thing as "don't need more offense." A run scored is as good as a run saved.

You're right that he's just a small upgrade for this year, since there is only a few months left, there's only so much any player can do. But the 1-ish win upgrade he probably is could be the difference between playoffs and no playoffs.

And then they get to keep him for several more seasons. That's a good thing as long as he can stay on the field.

In the long run, he's significantly better than Reyes with both the bat and the glove and Reyes is also a big injury risk.

So Toronto takes on a greater contractual obligation to get older at short while not addressing their greatest need.  Colorado gets out of only two years worth of heavy money at short, not exactly signalling a rebuild.  The one winner here may be Reyes, whose aging legs get to play on the natural stuff again.

How many 10-9 games do we see in October?
7/28/2015 12:34 PM
I'm guessing not many???

Right.  Pitching wins games in October.

Maybe there's not an advanced stat for that.

But they still have to score runs, right? I mean, yeah, the saying is "pitching wins," but low scoring games just make offense that much more valuable.
