In 2014 Jose Molina had 247PA and scored a total of 4 runs, and collected only 2XBH in the entire season. Somehow he found a way to steal 3 bases...

Kinda the mirror image of Enzo Hernandez in 1971.

As the Padres regular SS, Enzo:
-- 143 games
-- 618 PA
-- 12 RBI

In June 1976, Toby Harrah started at SS in both games of a doubleheader. He never touched the ball once in either game. Is the only time that has occurred in MLB history..

Luke Appling once fouled off 24 pitches during a single at bat before drawing a walk...

Johnny Mize is the only MLB player to hit 50 HR and strike out less than 50 times in a season.

Jimmy Rollins owns the distinction of the most hits without hitting .300. In 2007 he hit .296 while collecting 212 hits.

In 1944, Red Barrett pitched a complete game shutout, requiring only 58 pitches..

In 2006, Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a grand slam on the first pitch of his first MLB at bat...

According to Wikipedia, Daniel Nava also hit a grand slam on the first pitch he saw in MLB:

Retrosheet agrees:

The Appling thing is interesting, but I would love to see a source for it.  Pitch-by-pitch record keeping is a relatively recent phenomenon, and I'm at least somewhat skeptical of such records before the, say, 1980s.

Same thing with the Barrett record...it's certainly possible...he faced 29 batters, have up just 2 hits, no walks and no strikeouts, so it's a good candidate for the record.  It's cited in several places on the internet, but I'd love to see an original source for it.  This source, for one, comments that contemporaneous accounts made no mention of it.  Probably that was because no one cared about that feat at the time...but I would love to see an original box score or game story that referenced the pitch count.

This source discusses the Appling at bat (and the Ashburn at bat also cited in this thread) and reiterates the lack of good source material for things like pitch counts and number of foul balls.

Box score:

1 hour 15 minute game

Yes, that's the link I posted under "this source."  The one that mentions that none of the contemporaneous accounts cite the pitch count.  Notice the box score has no pitch count either...none of the box scores that are publicly available show a definitive pitch count.

I'd love to see a contemporaneous record of it... or at minimum, see when the 58 number was first cited and see if we can work back from there.  Until then, I think we have to take it with a grain of salt.

Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth scored exactly the same number of runs in their careers: 2,174. What are the odds?
This is the first time I ever heard that. Cool.

Many of your other postings are amazing too, I tip my hat to your baseball knowledge. Knew the one about Gaylord Perry, bizarre no? Makes you think baseball really is directly linked to the universe's primal forces as Spaceman Bill Lee always said.

Have Jose Molina 2014 bat in front of Enzo Hernandez 1971 and it is possible your team could actually score negative numbers of runs !

Changing tunes now -

who is the only 4-time batting champion not in the Hall of Fame ?
2/6/2016 5:42 PM
First guess is Ichiro...
2/6/2016 5:56 PM
Wrong...Miggy

Mauer and Larry Walker 3 each. Ichiro only 2
2/6/2016 6:01 PM (edited)
Well, Miggy isn't eligible...I think the answer he is going for is Bill Madlock.
2/6/2016 6:12 PM
I didn't think about him...
2/6/2016 6:55 PM
Who is "Miggy"?

Anyway, yes, it is indeed Bill Madlock who led the league in batting in 1975, 1976, 1981 and 1983 and had a lifetime AVG of .305 after 15 seasons.
2/6/2016 7:54 PM
Oh Miguel Cabrera, been in Italy since 2004, know what is happening but miss out on colloquialisms and nicknames at times regarding current players.

Anyway, Madlock is the answer and I have learned something today.

Who are the only two players to have hit 300 home runs during the 1950s?

Who are the only two players to have driven in 1,000 runs in the 1950s?

Who stole the most bases in the 1950s?
