Detroit Tigers - the 'new' Philadelphia Philles Topic

Wow, they signed Upton. In 5-6 years that team will be old and expensive. It won't matter to the owner who will probably be dead.

Enjoy Detroit fans! The last 2-3 years have been a wonderful experience for us Phillies fans!

No signing will ever be as bad as the Howard extension.

Difference between Tigers and Phillies.
1. Miguel Cabrera G.O.A.T.
2. Tigers infield is young (McCann, Iglesias, Castellanos, Miggy is the GOAT, Kinsler's contract will be up in 2 years)
3. Al Avila isn't Ruben Amaro, he will sell if the Tigers can't compete

1) Not really. He's great. Just not greatest of all time. Unless "all time" means AL central first basemen in the last three years.
2) Well, two of those guys are young.

Castellanos is 23, McCann is 25, Iglesias is 26.
Never mind, maybe Pujols is the GOAT but Miggy is second

BL has a lot of Cabrera-hate since MC won two AL MVP trophies that BL thought Mike Trout deserved.

WAR!??!?!?!!?

Let's be honest, here: nobody playing right now is close to being the greatest of all time at anything, except maybe catcher defense (Yadier Molina) or catcher offense (Posey, assuming you pretend Piazza isn't really a catcher since his defending was so poor).  And even Posey is a stretch.  Cabrera is a great hitter, but he hasn't even played his post-prime seasons yet, and he's already a little behind Frank Thomas in terms of career numbers.  And yeah, he's probably at best the 2nd-best of his generation, with Pujols being arguably one of the top 10 hitters of all time.

Actually, if you include relief pitching, there are some GOAT candidates.  Nobody is as good as Mariano, probably, or at least couldn't be called so yet, but if you just want to look at raw strikeout ability - well, you could say 3 of the best ever are all pitching for the Yankees as of now...

Care to list your GOAT at each position?   I can't imagine you get 100% agreement on them from the first 10 people to respond.

No hate. I think Cabrera is awesome. Just not greatest of all time.

I ignored McCann because he sucks.

Nearly every team in the AL has catching problems. McCann is one of the better catchers in the AL

I can't find CS% but WIS has him with A+ fielding, A range and an A+ arm. McCann also has the highest BA for a catcher in the AL (Blake Swihart has a higher BA but only has 309 PA) but he does only have the 4th highest OBP and he isn't much of a homerun hitter (does play in Comerica). Again he is average compared to 2015 catchers but with all the AL teams struggling to find quality starting catchers, McCann is good. Russell Martin and Salvador Perez are the only better catchers. How much longer can Brian McCann "produce" and will Stephen Vogt repeat his "career year" at age 32?

I'm sure you're right.  No doubt about it.  But I bet if 10 randomly selected rational baseball fans were asked to do the same thing, none of them would list Miggy as the GOAT at 1B, much less as a hitter in general, which is what seemed to have been implied here.
