Can anyone explain this difference between dWAR and WIS ratings?

Aoki: -1.1 dWAR over four years
2012   dWAR 0.1    B/D
2013   dWAR 0.6   B+/C+
2014   dWAR -1.3  A-/D+
2015   dWAR -.5    A+/D
Marte: 4.7 dWAR over four years
2012   dWAR 0.5    D/D-
2013   dWAR 1.8    D/D-
2014   dWAR 0.4   D+/D-
2015   dWAR 2.0   A-/D-  Gold Glove year

Aoki played mostly right field, while Marte played mostly left.  Marte has a higher dWAR every year, and won a gold glove, yet WIS says Aoki is better defensively every year.

dWAR is a much more advanced stat.  WIS only uses absolute fielding % and RRF (relative range factor).  dWAR factors in success on opportunities.  Aoki has played for 2 teams with flyball staffs in a large outfield.  Marte plays in a fairly large outfield as well, but behind one of the most extreme groundball pitching staffs in baseball.  That means his total chances are well below average, so his simple range factor is thoroughly unimpressive.  The percentage of chances he makes plays on, however, is actually very good.  So his dWAR looks pretty solid.

I don't have the numbers ATM, but my impression is that Pittsburgh and Atlanta generate more groundballs than anybody else.

Ok, I was wrong about the Braves, but the point still stands: In 2015, the Pirates led MLB in GB%, and had an above average K rate.  So not a lot of balls for the outfielders.  Giants were middle of the pack.  In 2014, the Pirates led MLB in GB%, Royals were 24th.  In 2013, Pirates had a GB% a full 4% higher than the next closest team, and the Royals were 2nd to last.  And in 2012, the Pirates were a mere 6th (only 1.9% behind 1st), and the Royals were 26th.
So yeah, the Pirates see VERY few balls to the outfield.  Fewest in baseball the past 3 seasons.  That's probably the cause of the discrepancy you're seeing.

Great feedback, thanks!  Too bad WIS penalizes Marte to the point that, other than 2015, there would be little consequence in throwing even a non-outfielder out there to get similar results.

As someone else wrote, WIS uses relative range factor (RRF) which more or less means chances per game. Like most of the stats WIS uses, it is a descriptive, not a predictive stat. (Not to talk dow, but in case my meaning is't clear this means it describes what player did-- not what we can expect him to do in the real world.).
