Franklin-taggl
Last seasons Champions return all but 3 players and should be a contender to win this tournament once again. My Franklin team will be very dangerous from the outside with some big time perimeter players along with a defense that is capable of shutting down anyone on a given night.
Early on my team hasn't clicked on all cylinders but they're still growing and mixing in a couple freshmen will definitely have its ups & downs. Joyner, Butt, & Billiot should be great this year with Hale & Peachey providing a lot of the offense.

US Coast Guard-cmolli
Cmolli has taken the Coast Guard to back to back National Title gms the past two seasons and looks to have an explosive offense led by potential AA Efrain Hamilton. Some elite ball handlers and 6 sr's will help USCG make another deep run in this years tourney but the bench is very young with 6 freshmen. It will be interesting to see what cmolli does in recruiting next season if he does opt for 6 more freshmen it would give him a superclass.

Becker-carlbuzz
I think this is the odds on favorite to win the challenge this season and maybe the National title too. Carl's team finished the tournament at 3-2 with a win over my squad in the finale and had it not been for a heartbreaking loss to USCG the night before the Becker Hawks would've claimed the challenge last season. Becker is heavy on upperclassmen and very talented ones at that! The scheme here is the real challenge though with all the solid ath-defenders playing zone.

Capital-cmac
Cmac has to be chomping at the bit to get this started more so than anybody. A win will finally let the Crusaders put last seasons "0fer" behind them and the future looks really bright for this team. This is a really young team and probably too young to make a big impact again this year but it's coming and coming soon. The offense will probably be focused around 2-3 players again and the defense will suffer a little when all that youth is on the court together. I see a slowdown pace coming for maybe all of their 5 gms.

Dickinson-mfnmyers
Dickinson is of course the Nations top ath-defensive team again. Myers, will once again be hellish to play even though the offense may be less than what it was last season. Dickinson has several upperclassmen that will generate a ton of turnovers and fouls caused getting into the opposing teams bench. The Dickinson-Becker gm last season was terrific that ended on a buzzer beater and is the final gm on the slate this year and maybe the one that decides it all!

NYU-Trentonjoe
The Violets are very young as well and as TJ has said they're probably looking to slow things down. Its been a great run the last few years for this team with another f4 run to end the season. NYU struggled in the challenge last year and may struggle again considering who they lost. Grand & Coolidge are both gone from last years great team and I'm not sure who will consistently give them their offense needed to compete with some of the teams here but if anyone can figure it out and work some magic it's TJ! Francis Brogden is a great PG with 80bh/86pa and currently carrying the offense.

As of right now 5 of the 6 here are ranked!
I'm really busy this week with work so I probably will be late on the wrap ups but I will get them...GL guys!

Slot 6
#8-Becker 57 at #6-Franklin 69- Franlin, IN. The Grizzlies were able to redeem last seasons lone loss of the challenge against the Becker Hawks with some stingy defense. The two teams combined to go 39 of 103 from the field but Franklin shot a large amount of their fg's from downtown and made 15 of 17 from the foul line. Franklin placed 4 guys in double figures with John Peachey leading the way with 17. Franklin plays at NYU next while Becker heads home to host USCG.

#24-NYU 45 at #7-Capital 51- Columbus, OH. The Crusaders wasted no time getting into the win column this time around with a hard fought 6 point win at home against TJ's squad today. The Crusaders only took 33 attempts from the field but connected on more than half of them while holding the Violets offense in check. Eric Green led a balanced attack with 11 points & 7 boards. Capital heads to Pennsylvania to play Dickinson tonight in search of #2.

#23-Dickinson 63 at #1-USCG 72- New London, CT. The Bear den was roaring for most of this one and when Calvin Daniels tip in put the Bears back on top with 3:49 left to play in the 2nd half the #1 team in the country flexed its muscle down the stretch by holding the Red Devils scoreless from the field for over 5 minutes after Dennis Guthrie converted a 3 point play to give Dickinson its first lead since early on in the first half. John Coldwell scored 23 on a rough night of shooting for the Red Devils. Potential AA Efrain Hamilton was his normal self with 16 points & 6 boards. Both teams were sloppy and combined for 48 to's & 36 of 67 from the foul line.

#6-Capital 67 at Dickinson 68- Carlisle, PA. Last seasons challenge saw Dickinson beat Becker in the first round on a buzzer beater and after Capital's Jim Champion's foul shots put the Crusaders on top with 8 seconds remaining the stage was set once again for a little Red Devil Magic. Dickinson phenom John Coldwell's put back on his own miss with one second remaining sent the home crowd rushing the court for a second straight year. Coldwell scored 21 and the Red Devil defense turned the Crusaders over 24 times. Jim Champion poured in 25 in the losing effort.

Slot 8
#1-USCG 78 at #5-Franklin 68- Franklin, IN. It was a rematch of last years National title game and unlike that game the Grizzlies weren't the baddest bear in the woods or on the court today. The Grizzlies played well but the Bears just played better and for the second year in a row the Bears have avenged their National tournament loss in this challenge. USCG placed 4 in double figures and the bitter sweet victory solidifies the #1 ranking as well. Donald Butt starred for Franklin with 20 points on 6 of 9 from the field and 8-8 from the foul line. Butt also had 3 steals.

#12-Becker 71 at #13-Capital 58- Columbus, OH. Ignacio Alvarado scored all 13 of his points in the first half and helped the Hawks build a double digit heading into the break. From there the game seemed to stay around 10-12 points in favor of Becker as the Hawk defense stymied the Crusader offense to a tune of 39% from the field. Becker senior guard Benjamin Wieczorek was stellar again with 16 points 6 rebounds & 5 assists.

NYU 57 at #25-Dickinson 65- Carlisle, PA. Violet guard Gary Arthur's 3 pointer with 18:05 in the 2nd half cut the Red Devil lead to 40-38 and the Violets looked as if though they would be in a position to win their first game of the challenge. It was the last fg NYU made until Arthur's next 3 ball ended the drought with 8:49 left but enough damage had been done and Dickinson held on for a 65-57 win. The win has Dickinson right in the mix of things. John Coldwell again led the Dickinson attack with 17 points & 6 rebounds.

#12-Franklin 65 at #19-Dickinson 76- Carlisle, PA. Franklin finished the game 25-71 from the field and 7-34 from beyond the arc for 35% & 20% respectively while committing 33 fouls & 23 To's! Even with all that John Peachey's 3 pointer put them ahead 60-57 at the 6 minute mark in the 2nd half and Roland Joyner's foul shot with 3:05 left got Franklin back within 1 point at 66-65 though I'm still not sure how they were even in the game at that point. It was a game that Roland Joyner & Donald Butt will want to soon forget as Joyner finished 2-13 and 0-10 from downtown, Butt was nearly as bad with a 5-20 performance. The Red Devils took full advantage of the Franklin fouls by going 32-44 from the charity stripe and John Coldwell made 14 of 16. Coldwell finished with 28 points & 6 boards.

NYU 68 at #9-Becker 73- Leicester, MA. The Becker Hawks once again leaned on a big lead at the break and cruised to a 73-68 win. The Violets made it respectable but was never really in the game and trailed by as much as 18 in the 2nd half. The Violets just couldn't ever get on track offensively against the Becker zone and the Hawk duo of Alvarado & Wieczorek proved to be too much with 33 combined points to go along with 5 assists & 4 steals. NYU is now 0-4 while the Hawks are 3-1.

The #1 team in the country led by as much as 26 in their spanking of the Crusaders and showed many that they may have something to say as to who represents in the National title game again this year! The Bears were lights out from the word go and finished 53% from the field for the game. Mathew Tilton & Willy Robinson were great off the bench and Michael Hughes starred with 13 & 5 assists.

Slot 10
Capital 53 at #16-Franklin 77- Franklin, IN. After last nights disaster in New London the Crusaders were hoping the Spurlock Center would bring them their second win of the challenge, it didn't. Trailing at half 32-30 the Crusaders came out flat and for the second straight game got blew out in what was another tough year in this challenge. The Crusaders did pick up their first win this time around and next seasons challenge could be promising with them no longer being the youngest team in it. Franklin put 4 into double digits as several bounced back with quality games.

#1-USCG 74 at NYU 64- New York, NY. Things continued to trend as they had been for both of these teams with USCG rolling right a long and the Violets being competitive but coming up short at the end. NYU finishes at 0-5 this time around but with a lot of youth too. USCG's Efrain Hamilton will be an AA....the only question will be 1st or 2nd team? Hamilton dominated with 19 pts & 7 boards. USCG is perhaps another question as well...Can they make it back to the f4 for a 3rd consecutive year? After this showing I have no doubts they can but it will be tough as always.

#18-Dickinson 60 at #8-Becker 62- Leicester, MA. The best game of the day was the last one and it was also the one that decided the champion of this years challenge. Another classic for these two guys and I have no idea what the hell I would've done had Myers mad that full court shot but I'm pretty sure I would've lost it had he did, lol. Becker jumped out early in the first half but the Red Devils ended the half on a run to tie it up at 33. These two were nip & tuck for the entire 2nd half with neither team able to get any separation but Becker with 3:45 remaining and trailing 58-53 was able to outscore the Red Devils 9-2 to take the crown!

Congrats, Carl
GL the rest of the way everybody.
Thanks, Myers....I wished I would've had more time though but I'm out of town and even worked today :(
cmac, Your time is coming man...that's a really nice team you got coming.
Carl, I'll send you the GC here in just a little bit let me know if for some reason you don't get it.
5/1/2016 7:34 PM
Congrats carl....i think you may have the true #1 team in the nation. Taggl great writeups again and thnx for running the tourney again. Carl exposed why i think i won't have a contending team this year. Still sucks i lost the last 2 years on a tie break! Lol....not to mention 2 in a row NC games :)

gl the rest of the way guys...i may go 0-7 next year. As taggl mentioned somehow i fell into a superclass setup.
5/1/2016 10:33 PM
