Franklin Invitational '95 Schedule Topic

Real quick guys, the recaps will come in a little slow the next 2 days due to me travelling but I'll get them.
So far I'm a little surprised with how well Dickinson has done with that young group...Hell of a job dude!
TJ's team looks like they've hit their stride with perfect timing but things can turn south pretty quickly.
Don't be surprised if Carl doesn't lose again.
If Cal Tech finds a way to get past Meyers he will be 3-1 and possibly in the drivers seat with Capital, NYU, & Becker to finish at home!
I predicted Capital to pull this thing out and still going to stick with that.
GL tonight guys.

Going to be late this evening before I get to anything.
So much for Carl possibly not losing again- Cmolli's young team scores a big win!
TJ's team stays hot and pulls out another great gm....that team has a knack for making plays in the last couple minutes which is always nice.
Cal Tech & Capital both kept pace and play a huge gm here in a few...the loser if NYU wins again will be in a big hole.

Slot 7
#19-NYU 68 at Franklin 60- Franklin, IN. Regardless if it's at home or on the road TJ's NYU squad knows how to win close games! The Violets dominated the 2nd half and in doing so improved to 4-0 in the challenge with another game very much in the balance when Franklin big man William Simmons made the score 60-58 with a 1:26 left. That's when the Violets got comfortable and amped up the intensity on the defensive end and secured a 68-60 win in front of a hostile Grizzlie crowd. As good as Arthur & the offense has been it's been the Violet defense that has carried them to this point as the Violets held Franklin to 38% from the field and has yet to allow anyone to score over 60 points in this tourney. Gary Arthur was solid with 15 points but the play of Junior center William Ricks and his double double of 17 pts & 11 rebounds was the difference. NYU heads home to face the Bisons of Gallaudet who remain winless in this challenge.

#11-Cal Tech 66 at Dickinson 55- Carlisle, Pa. Cal Tech dictated the pace and therefore the game with a methodical slow down approach that saw them lead this one from the 15 minute mark of the first half. Senior big man Philip Schwartz led the Beavers once again with a strong performance of 18 points, but maybe more importantly was his presence in the lane on the defensive side of the ball that held a Dickinson team to 4 points from its bigs. Cal Tech now heads home for the remainder of the tournament and in control of its own destiny as wins in all 3 games would give them the title.

Gallaudet 68 at #12-Capital 74- Columbus, OH. The Crusaders kept pace by taking a page of out the same book that TJ & the Violets have been using when the game is on the line with 2 minutes to go. The Crusaders led by only 1 with 2:02 left when Eric Green & Jim Champion both came up with big baskets on back to back possessions to stretch the Crusader lead to 68-62 and eventually seal the game from the foul line. Eric Green recorded a double double of 15 & 12 and Jim Champion kept the Bison defense on their heels with 7 3's & 26 points. The Crusaders now travel west for a show down with Cal Tech with both teams needing the win to stay in the title hunt after NYU's victory over Franklin. Gallaudet still looking for their first win ironically is in position to help the Crusaders as they will be taking on the Violets at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.

Becker 60 at USCG 64- New London, CT. The Bear Den hasn't had a whole lot to cheer about after these first few games of the season but you wouldn't know that from last night. Bear fans watched their team grow up in a big way with some key foul shooting after the Hawks tied things up at 58-58 on a Harry Bardwell shot with 1:45 left. Dean Flora followed that by making 3 of 4 from the line and Freshman Claude Lupien made two more with 12 seconds left to push it back to a 3 point game after Becker cut the lead to 1 on a Mason Twitchell jumper. USCG held Becker to 39 % from the floor and forced 15 to's.

Franklin 63 at USCG 80- New London, CT. Cmolli has his team rolling as the Bears used a big 1st half en route to a 17 point thrashing of their fellow species in the Grizzlies. Mama said it's because they got all them teeth but no toothebrush...bad breathe=bad offense for the Grizzlies who struggled all evening especially taking care of the ball with Senior Donald Jones turning it over a whopping 10 times! USCG was in control the entire game and placed 3 players in double figures with Calvin Daniels leading the way with 16 points & 2 blocks. Freshman guard Claude Lupien added 13.

Gallaudet 65 at #15-NYU 58- New York, NY. This game felt like one of those trap games that all good teams at one point or another find themselves in. Up until now the Bisons had fallen on hard times sitting at 0-4 in the challenge and facing the 4-0 Violets on their home court in this Nations greatest city. No sweat, right? The Bisons who led by 1 at the break trailed most of the 2nd half but a pair of free throws with just under 5 minutes left put the Bisons ahead for good and Coachucla's team grabbed their first win. The Bison win also sets the stage for NYU's next game with Cal Tech in Pasadena where the two will battle it out for the title after the miraculous half court buzzer beater win for Cal Tech.

#10-Capital 56 at #9-Cal Tech 57- Pasadena, CA. WOW! Cal Tech Junior guard Andrew Brewer, during the post game interview was asked if he had ever made a half court shot in a game before, he replied as most of any of us would with a simple answer of "no". Things looked grim for Cal Tech early in the 2nd half, shortly after taking a 35-30 lead the Beavers went cold going 9 minutes with out a single point and falling behind by 11 at 46-35 when the Crusaders took full advantage of the drought with a 16-0 run. The Beavers bounced back and rallied themselves with a 17-5 run of their own to take the lead back at 52-51, it was short lived as Capital star Jim Champion put the Crusaders back on top with a 3 ball on its ensuing possession for a 54-52 Capital lead with 2:40 left. Both teams seem to step it up a notch defensively as the teams went scoreless until Brewer's floater tied things back up at 54 with 21 seconds left. Cal Tech then had a mental breakdown defensively and Philip Schwartz was forced to foul Capital's Michael Holdsworth with 4 seconds remaining to prevent the easy lay up. Holdsworth made 1 of 2 giving Capital a 55-54 lead and Beaver fans heartburn. After the Cal Tech timeout the ball was in bounded, to Cal Tech's Andrew Brewer, where he proceeded to make that first half court shot sending Beaver Nation into pandemonium.

Becker 81 at Dickinson 72- Carlisle, Pa. These two teams had played back to back classics in this challenge and this one looked like it shaping up to be # 3 when the Red Devils fought their way back to even the score at 70 with 3 minutes left. The end of this one would not be so dramatic with Becker out scoring the Red Devils 11-2 down the stretch. The Hawks were fundamentally sound by controlling the glass and getting the young Dickinson team into foul trouble on its way to 47 foul shot attempts. Harley Poteete starred off the bench with a double double of 12 points & 13 boards, Becker put 3 others into double figures.

Franklin 59 at Becker 70- Leicester, MA. Many of these tourney games have been just like this one with the game very much up in the air in it's last few minutes of play. Franklin scrapped their way back into the game in the second half and found themselves down by 1 with 2 minutes to go but went scoreless the rest of the way as the Hawks soared to a 70-59 win. Efficiency is the name of the game and no one is any better at that than a carl coached Becker team, Becker limited turn overs and got strong contributions from all of its starters especially from the field where they connected on 17 of 31 attempts.

#24-NYU 38 at #7-Cal Tech 60- Pasadena, CA. You didn't need to track the score to know who was winning in this one and I think it's safe to say that TJ had envisioned something a little different than the 21 points his team had scored with only 9 minutes to go in the game. This one was for all the marbles in this years challenge and it was all Cal Tech from the outset. The Beavers held the Violets to a meager 14 fg's while forcing 17 to's & only 38 total points! Junior forward Earl Schuler led the Beavers with 14 points & Junior forward/guard Andrew Brewer( AKA Capital Punishment) added 11 with 3 steals.

Gallaudet 74 at USCG 56- New London, CT. The Bisons are getting hot and used a 43-22 half time advantage to cruise to their second straight win of the challenge. Gallaudet's Samuel Quevedo who is 1 of the 2 lone Sr's on this team had struggled to get things going offensively in the challenge but had no problem leading the way here with 14 points & 7 rebounds. The Bears, winners of 2 straight finished a miserable 33% from the field and if it wasn't for a late 3 point play by reserve big man Brian Green the Bears would not have had a single player hit double figures.

Dickinson 62 at #17-Capital 75- Columbus, Oh. Defense! Defense! Defense! That seemed to be the motto for the night with Capital holding Dickinson to 2 points over the last 4+ minutes and like the Bisons, held the Red Devils to a paltry 33% from the field as well. Coming off of yesterdays crushing defeat to Cal Tech on a miracle heave from Beaver guard Andrew Brewer it would've been easy to think and maybe even expected a let down here from the Crusaders but that wasn't the case and big props to cmac's team for that. Senior C Eric Green posted another double double with a dominating 18 point 14 rebound performance.

One also has to wonder what would've happened had it gone in? Capital led big at the break and did just enough to hold off the late rally of the Grizzlies to end the challenge at 5-2 this year. The challenge was a successful one but not winning the title because of that Cal Tech miracle is unfortunate and something that's probably going to stick with them for a while. Senior Eric Green finished with another double double with 11 points & 10 rebounds.

Becker 52 at #6-Cal Tech 51- Pasadena, CA. Mason Twitchell's runner with 14 seconds left handed the Hawks their best win of the tourney and capped off a 21-10 Becker run starting from the 7:43 mark in the second half. The Beavers, coming off of last nights tournament clinching win against the Violets, played well and started the 2nd half strong but ultimately couldn't overcome the struggles it had from the field & foul line. This was just one of those typical Becker games. Cal Tech finishes at 5-2 and this years champion. Congrats!

NYU 77 at USCG 56- New London, CT. A young team is like a horrible roller coaster ride that sometimes doesn't end quick enough! After 2 straight wins the young Bears have now endured 2 straight butt whippings. The Violets ran away with this one early and never looked back en route to a 21 point win. Gary Arthur was back to his usual self with 6 3 balls, 6 rebounds & 26 total points. NYU finishes 2nd at 5-2(0-5 last season) tied with Capital & Cal Tech but finishes ahead of Capital due to h2h.

Dickinson 56 at Gallaudet 70- Washington, DC. It was all about the Gallaudet defense again as the Bisons dominated early in the 2nd half to cruise to an easy win. Gallaudet's zone took away the penetration lanes and kept the fouls to a minimum which is always the key when trying to beat the Red Devils. Bison bigs Carlos Hinojosa & Christopher Lindsey dominated the paint as both recorded double doubles with 14 points-10 rebounds & 10 points-10 rebounds, the two big men also added 6 blocks between them. Gallaudet got off to a rough start in this by losing it's first 4 games but finished winning 3 in a row and looks strong for next season.

GL this season guys and hopefully I can do enough in my brutal conf to make the tourney with the rest of you...I was close in a lot of these but youth can be a killer sometimes.
Congrats again Matt, and great runs at this by TJ & cmac!

taggl I'm glad to see you pick up you are much better at this than I am lol, Knight D3 is definitely one of the best especially with all the effort that has been put into making Knight D3 feel like its own community. Too bad I switched jobs right as this happened would've been really fun :)
