I've been out of the game a while but I remember that free agents who haven't had offers start to lower their demands at some point. When does this happen? After the free agent signing period? Towards the end? Thanks in advance for your answer.

As FA advances if they haven't received an offer. They drop their demands to 1 season after the 8th ST game but on the 3 PM cycle. That is also the last cycle to sign them without the chance of a ratings drop.

So they progressively drop all the way down to 1 year? Or is it all at once when the 8th ST game hits? When do they lose their compensation pick association?

They progressively drop if no offers. Demands become 1 year after 8 ST, 3 PM cycle(although some will accept 1 year before that). Comp pick drops when Amateur draft players appear.
