Quick Gameplanning Tutorial? Topic

Hey guys - been playing for a couple months and have a couple D3 squads. I'm really enjoying the recruiting and watching my players progress and perform. However, I still feel like I'm behind on my gameplanning. I've read what's provided by WIS, but was curious if there was anything I should be doing before each game. As it stands now, I'll look at each team's roster, see if they are better at LP or PE, then set my defensive positioning based on that. I'll slow the pace if I'm outmatched and go fast when I feel like I should be favored. That's usually the extent of it. I've gotta be missing something.

I'm in my second season with both of the teams below, so I'm still trying to get guys in that fit the different systems. I like setting the player roles, but fear that what I deem as important may not translate to on-court success.

Just looking for some useful pointers here. Thanks!

Okay, I'm quite new to so I might not be the most helpful guy in the world, but looking at team averages for LP and PER means nothing. If a team had 7 guys at 55 low post and 5 guys at 40 Lp post the average will be about 48, incredible for DIII but they will still suck inside. In DIII, I would look at how many guys they have over 65 Pe will ok speed and bh, and how many guys over 65 Lp with good athleticism.

Try to move around your starting lineup, especially guys with low De and ATH. Marsh is a good example. Do not keep low ATH DE guys on your team that much!

Also, don't fret too much about game planning, it does not matter that much.

I look at a teams ratio of 2FGA:3FGA. If it is roughly 2:1, I play a zero defense....the farther it gets from 2:1 to more I adjust the +/-.

For individual players, I try to move by best defenders on the other teams best scorers and the move my best offensive players on their worst defenders.

I treat the 2/3 and 4/5 as pretty interchangeable for my teams.

Be honest your FR aren't good. You need to get rid of Marsh on Maryville and your 2 FR on WConnST. Can't have DEF below 10 and be successful. Also don't just look at PER/LP, you need to look at REB and see where your opponent shots a lot from. If he has good PER but only takes 5-10 3's a game don't go +. If your ATH/REB in your bigs is way better than opp. than go +, if your opp. dominates on the boards and does not shot a ton of 3's go -. Also look at where your opp. scores most from in the box score or their stats. Don't just look at PER/LP ratings. Hope this helps.

Just a suggestion. 2/3 shouldn't be that interchangeable. Look for a 3 that has good REB ratings. Also at the 2, if he is a PER threat than he needs good BH and SP to get open shots. You can get away with less BH at the 3 than you can at the 2. Ex. if Bob has 65 SP, 70 PER, and 30 BH he will be better effective at the 3 because of the BH. You want your 5 to have better BLK and REB, especially if running a zone.

Good stuff. Can't really sever ties with my young guys at this point. Recruiting the guys you want on a low budget is tough. Gotta imagine all of these D3 guys are going to have some deficiencies.

My 2/3 and 4/5 usually end up looking very similar. If there isn't a big difference in core skills, I think you gain more from matchups then the few points in those skills.

For Example:
Name Yr. Pos. A SPD REB DE BLK LP PE BH P WE ST DU FT OVR
Roger Jones So. PG 39 82 11 22 2 2 81 57 42 44 81 53 C- 516
Willie Rainville So. SG 37 81 15 52 2 15 86 55 49 70 85 95 C 642
Johnathon Pickrell Jr. PG 50 80 8 64 2 18 28 92 61 48 75 59 B 585
Bernard Schwein Jr. SG 47 68 14 52 13 17 96 75 54 76 93 66 C 671
James Rogers Fr. PG 12 64 9 18 4 14 63 48 54 29 71 72 B- 458
Brian Jolly Fr. PG 64 62 2 74 2 1 51 46 41 36 80 40 C+ 499

These guys all kinda play the 2 or 3 for my FCP team.

Ya, I agree with Trenton. I always want my 3 to be a guard. I basically want my 3 to be a copy of my 2 with 30 points higher rebound and maybe a little lower ball handling. Look at my team. Potter is basically a shooting guard with nice rebound and low post. Gordan Williams, my starting Sg, is literally the same player as Potter just with lower Rb and Lp.

I think the 4 and 5 ae all but interchangeable. All you need is a little more Lp and a little less Rb at the 4.

I like a guy at SF that I could play at the 2 or 4 in pinch. So, he would likely have more ATH and REB and LP and BLK than my normal SG and likely less SPD and PER than my normal SG. But if I don't specifically recruit a guy for SF (sometimes I just do 6 Bigs, 6 Guards) then the guy usually looks more like a guard than a big.
