HARTFORD AL NORTH (80-82) 12TH pick in the upcoming draft. Pitching is the strength of this roster. The ML staff is loaded with solid performers. Miguel Bonnilla, Arthur Mann and RP Eric Duran anchor the staff. 26 year old SP Edwards Gibson is a solid contributor. Last year’s #13 pick, P Aderlin Cox and Season 32 11th pick Ron Mahoney are the future. AA P Keith Bailey and RF Brian Krause will be making the move to the Bigs in two or three seasons. A scan of the current roster shows 26 year old CF Howard Marte is young and heading into his prime. A lifetime ML .279 hitter averaging 30+ HRs per season, Marte only makes $378K. You will have contractual control for several more seasons. AAA C Tanner Montgomery will be ready to join the ML roster next season. His ratings are still moving up and his 80 PC rating should significantly impact the pitching staff. This is a team with a number of nice pieces. The question is …. at 80-82 this team is at the crossroads. You can build on the existing foundation, or use several key valuable trade pieces if you want to do a full reconstruction. That means there are two very viable choices for the next owner in Hartford.

SACRAMENTO AL WEST (70-92) 9TH pick in the upcoming draft. If you are looking for a rebuild then Sacramento might just be your team. $23 M is scheduled to come off the books before next season, and there are a number of players who could draw significant interest on the Trade front. 30 year old Maverick Jepsen could be a trade piece that brings back a future star in return. 26 year old SS Allie Post is one of the young leaders on the team. Post just completed his third year in the majors which translates to a number of years left for you to have contract control. A lifetime .279 ML hitter, Post is a bargain at $378K. Sacramento’s future stars include last season’s #8 pick in the draft, Kyuji Ogawa and the number one from season 32 P Farmer Duncan. AA P Buddy Miller should be ready to contribute to the ML roster in 2 more seasons. AAA RF Jimmy McMichael will also be ready to join the ML roster this upcoming season or next. Sacramento is a team in need of an experienced owner who has the patience to take a couple of seasons to build the franchise.

HELENA NL WEST (81-81) 13TH pick in the upcoming draft. Helena is another rebuild that has already been significantly started. It’s looking for an owner ready to finish the job. $18M will be available to come off the books in season 34. Helena has a great start on a pitching staff. Sammy Gutierrez (ML lifetime ERA of 3.52) joins Domingo Barajas (Lifetime ML ERA of 3.65) and Sergei Medders (Lifetime ML ERA of 3.96). 19 year old Wilfredo Mendoza is at HiA and is a future star for the staff. CF Geoff Goldberg is the top hitter on the roster. Goldberg is .298 lifetime ML hitter. As I mentioned above, this is a rebuild where the foundation is firmly set. Over the last four seasons Helena has had up nine first round selections. Pitchers Fred May, Morgan McGee, Earl Freeman and Ross Williams should join the ML squad over the next several seasons. As will CF’s Arthur Neal and Shelley Pose. 2B Hawk Bristow is also on a fast track to the Majors. What a great opportunity to pick up a team whose rebuild has been aggressively started. It just needs the right owner to finish the job. Id that you ?

BOISE NL NORTH (65-97) 6TH pick in the upcoming draft. Boise is much closer than the record indicates. 25 year old Pitchers Thomas Ramirez and Clarence Granderson along with SS Tomas Corpas (.289 Lifetime ML BA), RF Guillermo James (.301 Lifetime ML BA) and CF Harry Jimenez (.261 Lifetime ML BA ) provide a solid foundation. Boise has had eight first round selections over the last four seasons. Future stars like P Alex Neris, and P Pablo Martis, 2B Charlie Hargrave, 1B Russell Magee, 2B Rico Polanco, LF Walter Mahtook, RF Reed West and 3B Kory Ferguson will all be working their way to the Majors over the next couple of seasons. $16M can come off the books this season allowing for some nice payroll flexibility.

KANSAS CITY AL EAST 94-68 26TH pick in the upcoming draft. Only $35M on the books for season 34. This team is loaded with pitching. Previous owner made effort to build a staff with solid defense around it. 26 year old Paulie McCovey (3.89 Lifetime ML ERA), 25 year old Ryan Murray (4.37 Lifetime ML ERA) were effective as starters. Two young pups joined them last season as starters. 23 year old James Kwon and 27 year old Akinori Satou. Satou was especially hot with eight starts and a first season ERA of 3.50. Satou and Kwon project for continued ratings growth. Out of the pen Jumbo Kida (3.87 Lifetime ML ERA), Hiram Darnell (3.39 Lifetime ML ERA), and closers Danny Weston (3.50 Lifetime ML ERA) and Kazuo Shibiata (3.26 Lifetime ML ERA) were excellent. Two more arms are down on the farm and will be contributing very soon. 21 year old Eswalin Reyes was at HiA and might make a double jump to AAA this season. 21 year Rafael Alvarez was signed as an IFA last season and should double jump from Rookie league to HiA. Position wise, the roster has solid players with defensive skills. On the farm, 20 year old SS KJ Mikolas is a future star.

AUSTIN AL SOUTH 63-99 5TH pick in the upcoming draft. Only $30M committed for season 34. Austin needs a complete rebuild. The good news is that only four players currently on the roster are making over $378K. There are others in arbitration and free agents but the new owner will have the option to sign or release them. All four players who are currently under contract are in there final contractual season. Obviously, payroll flexibility is a huge selling point for this team. There are a few pieces in place. 24 year old LoA SS Larry Banks is a player that can be a key foundation piece for the new owner. Pitcher Johnny Fleming is solid out of the pen. But he and Miguel Gonzalez could be excellent trade chips to pick up younger players. On the farm, Pitcher Cam Monahan, and SS Henderson Park were selected in last seasons draft. Both will play key roles for this team in the future. Make no mistake, Austin’s transformation will take three or four seasons and an experienced owner. But a long term commitment will bear fruit for an owner with patience and a rebuild plan.

WASHINGTON DC NL EAST 68-94 8TH pick in the upcoming draft. Only $5.5M committed for season 34. DC is another franchise that will need a complete rebuild. DC’s payroll commitment is much smaller with every player making more than league minimum up for arbitration or filing for free agency. Season 31 brought DC 7 of the first 69 draft picks. Most of those players sit at the AAA level set to join the big league roster over the next few seasons. SS Alan Newsome, P Todd Wright, CF Don Klassen, and Pitchers Yusmeiro Escalona, and Jeremy Rollins all joined from the season 31 draft. P Gene Roling joined as 1st pick in the season 32 draft. LF Patsy Jensen and 28 year old Pitchers Brian Hamilton and Clint Price could be a valuable trade chips to add prospects to this list. The foundation looks to be in place but, like Austin, DC will need an owner with patience and a plan to rebuild this team.

CHARLESTON NL SOUTH 82-80 15TH pick in the upcoming draft Only $45M on the books for season 34. Although they need a rebuild, Charlotte has several key pieces in lace. Key ML Pitchers for this franchise include, Norm Konerko (3.52 ERA), Magglio Boscan (3.41 ERA) and Fred Waters. 22 year old pitcher Alex Ayala is a former first round selection that will join the big league staff in a season or two. Position players Henry Lawrence, Yunel Bennett (2.92 BA with 23 HRs) and Pascual Calderone (.282 BA and 31 HRs) are the anchors of the big league roster. This is a team at the crossroads. The players already on the roster could be used as a foundation or as valuable trade chips for a rebuild. The new owner will have the option of choosing one of those options.
