Von Hayes. Mid 80s Phils were lean outside Schmidt and Carlton - both in the twilight of their careers. They traded a shitload for Hayes so he was always talked up. He was so average.

A better question would be were there players from your childhood that you grew up believing were great players but now realize were nothing special at all?
I have a couple of guys for this spot. I remember playing this one baseball video game for the original PlayStation. I think it was a 2002 game, but I don't think it was MVP baseball. I thought Richard Hidalgo was really good, probably was but he didn't have a long career. There was also Troy Glaus. He was someone I played with a lot on that game. Turns out he was just an average slugger considering it was the steroid era.

But the winner was...
Brett Tomko.
In that game, had no idea why, he could throw 100
used him all the time, had big time velocity in that game. Turns out, he was a mediocre reliever.

On simsports chat board, I'm pretty comfortable with most everything.

Do you disagree that "Both guys are .300 hitters with 25 homers and 100 RBI" doesn't apply?
No, I don't disagree that it doesn't apply. I already said it really doesn't apply in any real discussion.

I don't think you call a guy who hit .312 a .300 hitter. He's closer to .320 than .300. You don't generalize that number down by 12 points.

This is an internet simsports forum. "Real" discussion doesn't really take place.

I call a .312 hitter a ".300 hitter" because he is. Over the course of 10000 AB, it's 120 hits. 10000 AB is about a 20 year career. 6 hits per season. 1 hit per month. Woofuckinghoo!!!!

Are you really standing behind your dumbass, "BW and EM were comparable offensively?"

And there's only about a hit per week difference between a .250 hitter and a .300 hitter. So does that make them the same?

At least you acknowledged that you wouldn't try to pass off this bullshit in the real world.

OK, I'm gonna need you to pay attention.

A week and a month are not the same thing.
.012 and .05 are not the same thing.

And, yes, if someone said a .312 hitter was significantly better than a .300 hitter, I'd explain it to them just like I explained it to you. Not significantly different.
6/12/2016 11:35 AM
But 22 points of OPS+ means they were significantly different.
