You're right.

I can't imagine anybody in their right mind trying to argue that an inning that starts with a single being worse than an inning in which, not only the leadoff hitter, but ALL hitters in the inning strike out.

Can you imagine how foolish somebody would have to be to claim that?

Well, I think there was more than one batter in both innings, right?

If the third hitter of the first inning had struck out, would that have been better than the GIDP?

Even you are saying that balls in play are better than strikeouts.
This:

A ball in play *could* be a hit or an out. It's not a completed play.

An out (strikeout, ground out, etc) is already and only an out. It's complete
