Yeah, that makes sense.

Figured it out - USF stays in the American, UCF goes Sun Belt (which I'm using as a Sun Belt/ASun hybrid), and Troy goes to the MEAC. In real life, every HBCU in Div I is in the SWAC or the MEAC, so finding an appropriate fill-in is tough. Troy, in Alabama and with the fifth-largest African-American student population of any university, is probably a better fit for the SWAC, but will fit into the MEAC fine.

Moved USF not because gomiami was complaining, but because he was right. UCF was Sun Belt, ASun, CUSA, and then the American... USF was Sun Belt, CUSA, BEast, and then the American. USF's a doormat, but it's a big-conference doormat.

Thank you, Sir. Now if we can convince selbe to tackle realignment, your proposal would be an excellent template.

why not dump Syracuse and Pitt back into the BigEast? They were there for about 20-30 years.

Duquesne and Fordham? Either shove them into the American or if you think the American is more prestigious than the A-10, send them home to the A-10 and move Temple and maybe Rutgers to the American.

Big East, as currently constructed, is very, very Catholic. Syracuse and Pitt were in the big Big East, but there's a reason Creighton is in the BEast now. Butler's the only non-Catholic school in there in real life, so I thought I'd grab more large Catholic schools.

Since any of these ideas are unlikely to be implemented, I'll throw one out there.

Why not just make it EXACTLY like it is today? Yes, this would be you'd have unbalanced conferences but let's discuss what these mean. I think one of the biggest challenges would maybe be the conf tournament and how they match up with timings and dates. I think there is a way to do it though.

But here's the thing, do people really want to have realignment of the conferences? I'm in a conference right now with 5 friends. What if we get split up due to the realignment? Then we'd have to change schools, which is not the end of the world, but we probably won't want to. My 2 cents.

Instead of moving Duquesne and Fordham into the Big East I would move Dayton and St Louis. Both are large Catholic schools that are more successful and have much nicer basketball facilities than Duquesne and Fordham.

This is what i came up with last year:

In this proposed realignment below:
There would be 29 Div-1 conferences (up from 27 HD conferences currently).
There would be 348 Div-1 teams (up from 324 HD teams currently).
308 teams would be in their correct real life conference.
40 teams would NOT be in their current, real life conference, though many have historic ties to them (Syracuse and Pitt in Big East, Rutgers in A-10, Notre Dame in the Horizon, Seattle in WCC, Maryland in the ACC, etc)... these teams are shown in CAPS.

1 team would be eliminated from HD Div-1 (Morris Brown).
25 new teams would be added to HD Div-1 (this includes St Mary’s (of the WCC), which wasn't included in the original HD, as well as a number of Div-2 schools that moved up to Div-1 in real life (Incarnate Word, Bryant, etc).
So a net gain of 24 schools in Div-1.

NJIT and UMass-Lowell are not accounted for.
There may be other things that have been overlooked.

Also, i've put together a revised Division-2 realignment, which would have 24 conferences (instead of our current 23) of 12 teams each.

Also, i've put together a revised Division-3 realignment, which would have 36 conference of 9 teams each... so one division of 9 teams, 16 game in-conference regular season for Div-3.

Division 3 conferences in real life tend to be smaller, with most at 10 or fewer teams.

Anyway, at some point i'll post my new Div-2 and Div-3, but they're on my old computer which i haven't fired up in a while, plus I'm going to be out of town.

interesting discussion, reprising prior discussions over the years

any move away from 12 team conferences would be a huge change - lots of rewriting stuff

if there were responsiveness, which over a period of years has not been present, this proposal would be pretty darn good approach - modest degree of movement, good update

the transition would be a big issue - lots of coaches would gripe about moves

no way this happens at any foreseeable time

yep, and this was exactly my point about just swapping a half dozen teams here and there to get the major conferences more correct. these realignment ideas are fantastic--i just prefer to noodle seble for something on a scale he might be able to accomplish in the short term.
