the only thing I can think of is aejones saying to get 120 ath/spd combined at D3 and D2 get a combined ath/spd of 140 in his guards
otherwise whoever said that was bad you should not care 1 bit about overall rating when recruiting you have to look at what they can do generally look for guys with 2 of 4 abilities from offense/defense/rebounding/guard skills if not 3 of those 4 categories
because using your example
50 ath 20 spd 99 reb 50 def 70 sb 70 lp 1 per 1 bh 1 pas is 362
and 40 ath 40 spd 80 reb 40 def 80 sb 50 lp 25 per 25 bh 25 pas is 405 overall
guy 1 is better rebounder/defender/scoring in a big man that 25 bh/pas is nothing to the decrease in ath/reb/def/lp
also here is another
30 ath 90 spd 1 reb 50 def 1 sb 1 lp 99 per 70 bh 70 pas is 412
60 ath 60 spd 25 reb 50 def 25 sb 30 lp 80 per 60 bh 60 pas is 450 overall
player 1 is elite scorer, better PG, and in the press a better defender(as well in my opinion being a better defender in man too)
however both those situations the weaker player has the higher overall
Don't look at overall whatsoever when recruiting please please please the only thing overall does is give you an estimate in if you can pull them down ~480 D3 usually max and 530 usually max D2 both high prestige
